Holetown Festival commemorates the first settlers landing at St James in February 1627. There are parades with floats during the day, all well-organized and restrained, nothing outrageous. The Mallalieu Motor Collection lends its vintage cars, one of which carries Miss Holetown; a military band parades behind three police horses, a few kids march in costume, there are one or two masked performers, but the event is hugely popular with crowds lining the street from Sunset Crest to the Post Office. Along the grass verge, stalls are set up, selling jewellry, food, T-shirts, wraps, toys, tat, art, and of course there are the ubiquitous rumshops and Banks beer. All do good business with tourists and locals alike. In the evening there are different events on offer. Dont miss the police band playing on stage at the edge of the beach. This is Little England par excellence. The audience sits on neat rows of chairs on the sand, politely listening, a very colonial image against the setting sun, until the band tries to sell its latest CD. There are other, more contemporary shows on different nights, but none goes on beyond 2200. Contact Alfred Pragnell, T 4356264.
