Many keen golfers come here just to play golf and there are enough courses to keep anyone busy for a while. The Barbados Open Golf Championship is held in November and the Senior PGA European Golf Tournament in March. Sandy Lane, T 4322946. There are other championship courses but this is the best and most prestigious. There are now two new 18-hole courses and a 9-hole course, all on 600 acres of former sugar cane land next to the hotel. Royal Westmoreland Golf and Country Club, St James, T 4224653. An 18-hole, par 72, course and another nine-hole one spread over 480 acres on a hilly site in St James with views over the west coast. To play here you must be staying in one of the villas or at a hotel with an access agreement. Members can use the hotels beach club facilities a five-minute drive away. Construction of 350 villas around one of the nine-hole loops has now started, three club houses, a swimming pool and five tennis courts. Putting green, driving range, 18-hole mini course (fun for families, not serious golfers), lessons and balls (US$6 per bucket). They have a happy hour and a half 1600-1730.
