Running has become more popular in Barbados since sprinter Obadele Thompson won an Olympic bronze medal and hurdler Andrea Blackett won gold at the Commonwealth Games. All levels of fitness enthusiasts practice early morning at the Garrison. The Run Barbados Series is held in early December and comprises four races: a 10-km race, a half marathon, a marathon and a 4-km walk. This has proved so popular that entries rose from 300 in 1999 to 800 in 2000 and they are still rising into the thousands as everyone enjoys the carnival atmosphere.
