Tourism and Barbados go together like rum and coke or flying fish and chips. Visitors turn up time and time again, tune into the rhythm of calypso, soca and reggae and chill out with a Mount Gay rum or Banks beer. You can pay thousands of dollars to be seriously pampered alongside tanned music moguls and svelte supermodels, or forego life’s more indulgent pleasures by catering for yourself and shopping with local Bajans. The west coast, commonly referred to as the Platinum coast for the wealth of its guests, is the place to see and be seen. The south coast has the best beaches and is a popular choice for the package holiday end of the market, with a cheerful, relaxed atmosphere by day and noctural fun and games. The east is wild and untamed, a world apart, where the Atlantic crashes into cliffs, eroding the coastline and creating beaches of rare beauty. Drag yourself away from the coast though, into the hills inland to explore relics of colonial days such as plantation houses and signal towers, lush tropical gardens, museums and – you’ve guessed it – rum distilleries.
