Getting to madrid from the UK by car is not only timeconsuming, two to three days of steady driving, but it is also expensive. Motorways charge expensive tolls in France and Spain and ferry fares (see below) can be high in peak season. Petrol costs considerably more than in North America but roughly the same as in France, Spain and the UK. All vehicles must be roadworthy, registered and insured at least for third party. The Green Card, an internationally recognized proof of insurance, is not compulsory but it is strongly recommended. EU driving licences are accepted throughout the EU; travellers from other countries may need an International Driving Licence. For more information, contact the AA (T 08705 500600, http://www.theaa.co.uk) or the RAC (T 08705 722722, http://www.rac.co.uk). In general, standard European road rules apply. The legal alcohol limit is a mere 0.05%, and foreigners can get an on-the-spot fine of up to e300 if they exceed this. The speed limit in built-up areas is usually 50 km/hr, 100 km/hour on major roads and 120 km/hr on motorways, or autovías.
