Madrids Grande Dame of the hotel world, this lavish, creamy confection has a wonderful setting right by the Prado. Pure luxury, with a fine restaurant and chic cocktail bar which was a favourite with Dalí. The leafy terrace with thickly cushioned wicker chairs is a delight in summer. This elegant mansion built around 1900 is now part of the NH chain, and sits right in the middle of the three art museums. Rooms are spacious and well-equipped if not exactly oozing with charm. C Mediodía, Plaza del Emperador Carlos V 8, T 91 527 30 60. Metro Atocha. Classic 19th-century hotel near Atocha station. It may a bit down on its luck nowadays with bus tours providing much of its business, but the rooms are spacious and theres still a faint whiff of the old glamour. E Mora, Paseo del Prado 32, T 91 420 05 64, F 91 429 15 69. Metro Banco de España. Simple hotel which is much sought-after for its perfect location just opposite the Botanic Gardens and the Prado. Dripping with chandeliers and crawling with liveried footman, this sumptuous belle époque-style hotel offers luxury on a grand scale. Chic boutique-style hotel, with large, ochre-painted rooms decorated with a stylish mix of antiques and modern art and sculpture. Two fine restaurants (one, East 47, does excellent gourmet tapas), sauna and gym. Suites are available with jacuzzis for a real splurge. B Palacios, C Preciados 37, T 91 454 44 00, F 91 454 44 01. Metro Sol. Brand-new four-star hotel on one of the city centres main shopping streets; pristine modern rooms set in a former 19th-century palace which has retained its old staircase and fittings. B Tryp Reina Victoria, Plaza de Santa Ana 14, T 91 531 45 00, F 91 522 03 07. Metro Sol. A famous belle époque-style hotel which looks like it should be by the seaside somewhere. Historically, bullfighters have always stayed here and there is a plaque to Manolete at the entrance. C Asturias, C Sevilla 2, T 91 429 66 76, F 91 429 40 36, http://www.chh.es Metro Sevilla. This handsome, old hotel is close to the Puerta del Sol; inside rooms are the quietest, but the outside rooms have wrought-iron balconies for watching the action on the street below.
