A survivor from the Movida years, this is one of Madrid’s most chic and slickest restaurants – with prices to match. Abraham García’s imaginative Spanish cuisine is justly renowned, as is the excellent wine list.

** Babel, C Montalbán 9, T 91 521 02 77. Metro Banco de España. Closed Sat lunchtimes and Sun. A welcoming, traditional restaurant specializing in chargrilled meats. Its revueltos – scrambled eggs with an assortment of fillings – melt in the mouth.

** Paradis Casa-América, Paseo de Recoletos 2, T 91 575 45 40. Metro Banco de España. Closed Sat lunchtimes, Sun and holidays. Located in the Palacio de Linares, this attractive, tiled restaurant with a leafy summer terrace is a favourite with business people at lunchtimes, when it serves a good value menú del día. Rice dishes are the house speciality.

* La Fromagerie, C Salustiano Olózaga 5, T 91 431 95 19. Metro Retiro or Banco de España. Closed Aug, evenings and weekends. Typical, old-fashioned basement Madrileño bar, serving a good value menú del día to local office workers.

* La Vaca Argentina, C Prim 13, T 91 523 52 70. Metro Banco de España. Daily, all day. Popular chain of Argentine restaurants, for meat-lovers only. Modern decor of the bleached wood and chrome kind.

* La Biotika, C Amor de Dios 3, T 91 429 07 80. Metro Antón Martín. 1300-1630 and 2030-2430. Bright and airy café serving tasty vegetarian food, with plenty of dishes featuring seitan and tofu. Menú del día only e7.50.

* Casa Matute, Plaza Matute 5, T 91 429 43 84. Metro Sevilla. Daily. Charming, traditional Madrileño restaurant, decorated with antiques and lace curtains, which is very popular with locals. There’s a good tapas bar at the front if you just want to snack.

* Champañería Gala, C Moratín 22, T 91 429 25 62. Metro Antón Martín. 1330-1700 and 2100-0200. Valencian rice dishes, including fantastic paella, served in a beautiful, glassy patio filled with plants and flowers. Menú del día is excellent value.

* Doner Kebab Istanbul, C Atocha. Metro Antón Martín. 1200-2400, Fri and Sat 1200-0200. It’s not often you find a kebab shop with colourful turn-of-the-century tiles, marble-topped tables and chandeliers; also serves decent falafal.
