Hip, modern restaurant tucked down a sidestreet serving buffet-style lunches plus à la carte options in the evening. The food is great and reasonably priced, but its the crazy drag-queen cabaret acts in the evenings which are the big draw. Airy, Galician restaurant decorated with pale wood and check tablecloths, which prides itself on its homemade cooking. Basque cuisine is celebrated throughout Spain, and the basement of the Euskal Etxea (Basque Cultural Centre) is a great place for a delicious, budget lunch (menú del día e8), or some pinxos pieces of French bread with toppings at the bar. Ultra-modern, sleek new restaurant, serving specialities from Spains Atlantic coast, with plenty of deliciously fresh seafood and vegetables. Menú del día at around e12 and a fine wine list. Just off the Plaza de Oriente, with a small terraza in summer, this celebrated restaurant serves exquisite Basque cuisine; splash out on the five-course menú de degustación. A wide variety of tapas and raciones are available in the bar. ** Casa Botín, C Cuchilleros 17, T 91 366 42 17. Metro Sol. 1300-1600 and 2000-2400. This rambling, stone-built restaurant tucked into what was once the city walls is the oldest restaurant in Madrid (founded in 1725). Its touristy, but its still one of the best places to try the Madileño speciality of cochinillo, or roast suckling pig. ** Casa Paco, Plaza Puerta Cerrada 11, T 91 366 31 66. Metro La Latina. Mon-Sat 1330-1600 and 2030-2400, closed Sun. A resolutely old-fashioned tiled bar with a restaurant at the back. Dignified waiters in long aprons serve traditional sizzling grilled meats, accompanied by a good selection of Spanish wines. Black-and-white photographs show the founder posing with everyone from Catherine Deneuve to the King of Spain. Simple tapas are available at the bar.
