Dotted Line

** Casa Paco, Plaza Puerta Cerrada 11, T 91 366 31 66. Metro La Latina. Mon-Sat 1330-1600 and 2030-2400, closed Sun. A resolutely old-fashioned tiled bar with a restaurant at the back. Dignified waiters in long aprons serve traditional sizzling grilled meats, accompanied by a good selection of Spanish wines. Black-and-white photographs show the founder posing with everyone from Catherine Deneuve to the King of Spain. Simple tapas are available at the bar.

** Cornucopia, C Flora 1, T 91 547 64 65. Metro Opera. Tue-Sun 1330-1630. Tucked away in an old mansion, this colourful, quirky restaurant is a real find: sunshine-yellow walls, a deep blue ceiling, changing art exhibits, crisp white tablecloths, and fresh flowers on the tables. Spanish-American owned, it serves modern European food (always a vegetarian choice), and sublime desserts; don’t miss the strawberry mousse. Menú del día costs e10.

** Entre Suspiro y Suspiro, C Caños de Peral T 91 542 06 44. Metro Opera. Mon-Fri 1400-1630 and 2130-2330, Sat 2130-2330. Romantic, family-run Mexican restaurant just off the Plaza Isabel II, decorated with a profusion of plants and ceramics, serving genuine and delicious Mexican cuisine made with the freshest ingredients.

** Verde Oliva, C Segovia 8, T 91 541 35 40. Metro La Latina. Mon-Fri 1300-1600 and 2100-0100, until 0200 on Sat, Sun 1300-1700. New, fashionable spot designed by the cinematographer Julio Torrecillas, scattered with paintings and sculptures. Olive oil is king, and the dishes include risotto with wild mushrooms and pistachios and wok-fried vegetables.

*** Casa Lucio, Cava Baja 35, T 91 365 32 52. Metro La Latina. Closed sat lunchtimes and Aug. Celebrated typically Madrileño restaurant that is so popular it’s had to open another dining area across the street. The original space is the most atmospheric; this is the place to try Madrid-style tripe or cocido.

*** Viejo Madrid, Cava Baja 32, T 91 366 83 23. Metro La Latina. Deeply traditional, romantic and cosy, this inn serves up some of the city’s best food; great seafood and an extensive wine list.

** Palacio de Anglona, C Segovia 14, T 91 366 37 53. Metro La Latina. 1330-1600 and 2030-0100, until 0230 Fri-Sat. Fashionable, reasonably priced restaurant set in a 19th-century palace, with sleek, pared-down decor. Grilled meats, pasta dishes and unusual salads.

* La Burbuja que Ríe, C Ángel 16, T 91 366 51 67. Metro Puerta de Toledo. Tue 2000-2400, Wed-Sun 1300-1700 and 2000-2400. Noisy, cheerful, traditional Asturian restaurant where you can watch cider being poured from shoulder-height in the traditional way. Try the hearty stews and pungent goat’s cheese.

* Elquí, C Buenavista 18, T 91 468 04 62. Metro Antón Martín. Lunchtimes only, except at weekends, closed Mon and Aug. This budget, self-service vegetarian restaurant was the first in Madrid. Very good value, if slightly lacking in atmosphere.
