Friendly waiters in long white aprons scuttle efficiently between low wooden tables, and the walls are covered in kitsch paintings and old black-and-white photos of football teams and matadors. The house speciality is cazuela rabo de toro, or oxtail stew; the albondigas, or meatballs, are also highly recommended. Cervecería Alemana, Plaza Santa Ana 6, T 91 429 70 33. Metro Sol. La Fábrica, C Jesús 2, T 91 369 06 71. Metro Antón Martín. 1100-0100. A cheerful, down-to-earth locals bar with bright orange walls and a massive range of tapas. The counters groan with a dizzying array of canapés, slices of French bread loaded with all kinds of toppings from smoked salmon to cheese and quince jelly, and an octopus steams away on top of the counter. Taberna Las Dolores, Plaza de Jesús 4, T 91 429 22 43. Metro Antón Martín. Open until 0100. Beautiful, century-old tiled tapas bar one of the most típico in the city, and always jam-packed.
