Dotted Line

Bar Deutschlands, Dorotheenstr. 65. S-Bahn and U-Bahn Friedrichstr., S-Bahn Unter den Linden. 1000-2300. Known to be the best-protected bar in any capital, Bar Deutschlands is situated right behind the US Embassy, which has been surrounded by a tank and 8-10 police armed with machine guns since September 11 2001. Fortunately, it is now possible to visit the bar without several forms of identification.

Bergstüb’l, Veteranenstr. 25. U-Bahn Rosenthaler Platz, Tram 6, 8, 50. Daily from 1600. Always packed and very popular among the young, cool crowd of Mitte and Prenzlauer- berg, this laid-back bar with the Berlin must-have of its own live DJ, is a great spot. The crowd is into the whole Berlin retro look of 70s’ pinks and browns, and the comfy sixth-form-common-room- esque chairs make it a place to stay all night. There are always a few lively characters as well as a few shady ones!

Erdbeer-Bar, Max-Beer-Str. 56. U-Bahn Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. Daily from 1800. Everything in this extremely trendy bar is decorated in red and with an interior that is straight out of a second-hand 70s’ shop. The music from the house DJ is always electric disco and the atmosphere is very funky. You may have trouble meeting friends here as it’s almost too dark to see properly, but in spite of this, it’s where everybody meets before a night out, or even just to stay and drink cheap beers and good cocktails (€4-10). The best strawberry daiquiri in Berlin. This bar is highly recommended.

Goldrausch, corner of Rosenthaler Str. and Torstr., T 28 09 39 09, http://www.goldrausch.info U-Bahn Rosenthaler Platz. Daily from 1800. The former Burger King restaurant is now a plush bar split over two levels of kitsch gold and red. The atmosphere is very gay but anything goes so don’t be put off, although you may be after seeing the price list.

Greenwich, Gipsstr. 5, T 0177 280 88 06. U-Bahn Weinmeisterstr. Daily 1900-0600. Although one of Mitte’s fashionable bars you get the impression that Greenwich (pronounced Green Vitch) has somehow passed its sell-by date. Still highly chic-looking with elegant decor, but the cocktail list leaves you wanting more and the music hasn’t caught up with the electro lounge style of other bars and instead just sounds like noise.

Hotelbar, Zionskirchestr. 5, T 44 32 85 77, http://www.hotelbar- berlin.de U-Bahn Bernauer Str. Wed-Sat from 2200. A 70s-style bar with an orange colour theme, this new kid on the Mitte block has already made itself quite well known and well liked by having cracking music from new artists and promoting the bungalow record label (http://www.bungalow.de). The interior is retrograde but not too original and there is a nice-sized dance space at the back giving it more of a clubby feeling. Entry price varies but is never too expensive.

Newton Bar, Charlottenstr. 57, T 20 61 29 99, http://www.newton-bar.de U-Bahn Französische Str. Daily 1000-0300. With an entire humidor room upstairs, it’s almost compulsory to smoke a cigar while stretching back in the heavy, red-leather armchairs and gazing at one of Helmut Newton’s most famous photographs, which is the largest in private ownership. The clientele is beautiful, but quite snooty, and Peter Ustinov is rumoured to visit whenever he’s in town. Next door an Edelimbiss (literally a noble Imbiss) has been set up and over the road is the restaurant Lutter und Wegner. Expensive (cocktails €8-14).

Seven Lounge, Ackerstr. 20, T 27 59 69 79, http://www.seven-lounge.de U-Bahn Rosenthaler Platz. Daily from 1800. The generic Mitte bar, which holds claim to weird and wonderful lighting, weird in that it can break easily causing some painful injuries, so watch your head. The man behind this bar is clearly a fan of the 60s’ B-Movie, with the interior straight out of a science fiction film. There is a dimly lit private room at the back and the cocktails are fairly priced (€5-9).

Strandbar am Spree, in Monbijouplatz between Oranien- burgerstr. and Monbijoustr. S-Bahn Hackescher Markt. This bar/café in the middle of the park provides the much sought-after perfect summer atmosphere. Only open during the summer months, it has deckchairs set out and sand to give it the right vibe. A lovely place to while away the summer days.
