Strandbar am Spree, in Monbijouplatz between Oranien- burgerstr. and Monbijoustr. S-Bahn Hackescher Markt. This bar/café in the middle of the park provides the much sought-after perfect summer atmosphere. Only open during the summer months, it has deckchairs set out and sand to give it the right vibe. A lovely place to while away the summer days. Tacheles, Oranienburgerstr. 54-56. U-Bahn Oranienburger Tor, S-Bahn Oranienburger Str. This bar on the fifth floor of an artist commune has a certain sixth-form common room and anarchists squat feel to it. With a wall missing so you can look over Berlin and a bar that looks like a temporary set up at a mates party, this is a definite must see. Try and stay for the cine-reel projections late into the night. Bar 23, Lychener Str. 23, http://www.bar23.de U-Bahn Eberswalder Str. Daily from 1900. Check the website for the music line-up. The only thing that gives this bar away is the small red and blue light outside. Once you draw back the heavy curtain and walk into the tiny room adorned with hanging globes and snug leather armchairs youll want to make it your regular. Coffy, Winsstr. 65, T 0179 211 50 33, http://www.coffy.de Tram 1, 2, 3, 4. Daily from 1900. Practically pitch black, but presumably going with the Berlin rule that the darker the bar the cooler it must be, Coffy has become quite a favourite among the residents of the surrounding area. The bar has DJs each night after 2200 (the different types of music they play is posted on the website) and there is dancing at the weekends when you have to pay a 3-4 entrance fee. Fluido, Christburgerstr. 6, T 44 04 39 02. Tram 1. Daily from 2000. A deliciously dark, elegant and intimate cocktail bar with a fine selection of drinks. The staff definitely know their stuff, bombarding you with all sorts of different names when you just want a common-or-garden Gin and Tonic. The comfortable leather armchairs and first rate cocktails may make your visit longer than you expected and in the winter it is sometimes necessary to knock on the door to gain entrance. Dont let this daunt you too much. Cocktails 5-10. Mr. Tibbs, Marienburger Str. 32, T 0162 174 72 03. U-Bahn Senefelder-Platz. Opening hours are anybodys guess. This bar, which is a favourite, has a live DJ every night and like most drinking holes in the area is as dark as a winters night. Monday offers the best Motown soul and funk explosion with 50s rock 'n' roll chucked in, although its always pretty empty. The atmosphere is somewhat exclusive but still maintains an air of neighbourhood affability. The music changes daily and the cocktails are cheap and good. Watch out for the raised seating platform and the TV in the girls toilets. Weinstein, Lychener Str. 33, T 441 18 42, http://www.weinstein-berlin.de U-Bahn Eberswalder Str. Mon-Sat 1700-0200, Sun 1800-0200. In the midst of the trendy retro bars of Prenzlauerberg this homely, wood-panelled wine bar is a welcome change. The cellar is always fully stocked with wines that slip down delectably. Light snacks such as marinated garlic and olives are available. Wohnzimmer, Lettestr. 6, T 445 54 58. U-Bahn Eberswalder Str., S-Bahn Prenzlauer Allee. Daily from 1000. This café/bar mixes the shabby elegance of its silk-covered divans with the modern, glassy simplicity of its bathrooms and toilet seats. Wohnzimmer has quite a cult following, remaining a favourite with most Humboldt University students for whom its the perfect place to ponder over Schopenhauer with a cup of peppermint tea late into the night. Astro-Bar, Simon-Dach-Str. 40, http://www.astro-bar.de S-Bahn and U-Bahn Warschauer Str. Daily from 1800. Youll think youve wandered into a 70s BBC storage room for Doctor Who as you enter and then delve deeper into Astro-Bar. Robots, electric keyboards and old cassette players decorate the walls. The DJs maintain the electro comic feeling and the cocktails flow. A much more interesting alternative to the loungy bars of the district.
