You’ll think you’ve wandered into a 70s BBC storage room for Doctor Who as you enter and then delve deeper into Astro-Bar. Robots, electric keyboards and old cassette players decorate the walls. The DJs maintain the electro comic feeling and the cocktails flow. A much more interesting alternative to the loungy bars of the district. Hefner, Kantstr. 146, T 31 01 75 20. S-Bahn Savignyplatz. 2000-0300. This rather pretentious bar on the corner of Savignyplatz is always littered with beautiful people. Quite a place to see and be seen. However, the design is simple and elegant, the service fast and the cocktails slide down very easily. Lots of fat, leather sofas in which to lounge. Kumpelnest 3000, Lützowstr. 23, T 261 69 18. U-Bahn Kurfürstenstr. Sun-Thu 1700-0500, Fri and Sat from 1700. Legendary for not such good reasons – this former brothel has become quite a meeting place for Berliners. The later it is the better the dancing gets and the harder of hearing the partially deaf bar staff become. Always a big hit on the weekends. It was always in the Paris Bar that the latest art exchanged hands and politicians would remould and rebuild governments. Nowadays it is pop stars and celebrities who frequent this classically decorated bar with mirrors everywhere giving the feeling that it is enormous. The prices are high but the food is excellent – the blood sausage and potatoes are generally recommended. X Bar, Grolmanstr. 51. S-Bahn Savignyplatz. Daily from 1800. This cocktail bar has an extensive drinks’ list but sadly no beer on tap. The service is excellent and provided with a smile by dashing barmen. Haifischbar, Arndtstr. 25, T 691 13 52. U-Bahn Mehringdamm, U-Bahn Gneisenaustr. Sun-Thu 2000-0400, Fri and Sat 2000-0500. This bar is often the start of the evening as well as the end of it. The bar staff are friendly and pretty nifty with the cocktails and the room at the back serves sushi. The music is always good, but slightly loungy, and there’s always a crowd enjoying themselves. Roses, Oranienstr. 187, T 615 65 70. U-Bahn Kottbusser Tor, U-Bahn Görlitzer Bahnhof. Daily 2100-0600. Roses should be visited just to see the extraordinarily kitsch interior. The bar itself is tiny, the barmen gay as can be, and the walls covered in red, crush velvet with illuminated and flashing Popes and Madonna figures. Predominantly a gay bar but any sexual preference is welcome. An essential stop for any Oranienstrasse bar crawl. Schnabelbar, Oranienstr. 31, T 615 85 34. U-Bahn Kottbusser Tor. Daily from 2000. ‘The bar with the Martini Logo’ as it is also known is past its prime but it still attracts the punters. The old and decrepit DJ who looks like a cross between a Stones hanger-on and a Hendrix wannabe still manages to spin out some good funk and reggae but the dance floor is pretty cramped. Würgeengel, Dresdener Str. 122, T 615 55 60, http://www.wuergeengel.de U-Bahn Kottbusser Tor. Daily from 1900. ‘Angel of Death’ is decorated in plush, red velvet and adorned with 1920s chandeliers. The atmosphere of peccadillo is enticing and usually ensures you stay for much longer than planned. The prices are high (€5-8.50) and the cocktails deadly.
