Barcomi’s Deli, Sophienstr. 21, 2nd Courtyard, T 28 59 83 63. S-Bahn Hackescher Markt, U-Bahn Weinmeisterstr. Mon-Sat 0900-2200, Sun 1000-2200. The spacious and light bar in this intimate courtyard along with its 13 home-roasted coffees and the absolutely delectable cakes on offer is a big tempt- ation. The raspberry chocolate cake, carrot cake and New York cheese cake are just a few. The offer of a choice of four for €4 is highly recommended. The delicious bagels with home-made cream cheese and the wide variety of teas are also impressive.

Cinema Café, Rosenthaler Str. 39, T 280 64 15. S-Bahn Hackescher Markt, U-Bahn Weinmeisterstr. Daily 1200-0200. This tiny café with its walls festooned with film accessories has managed to survive 40 years of socialism as well as 10 years of capitalism. It’s noted for always having good- looking girls smoking and drinking coffee. Packed in the evening.

Galao A Pastelaria, Weinbergsweg 8 (beginning of Kastanien- allee), T 44 04 68 82. U-Bahn Rosenthaler Platz. Mon-Fri 0800- 1900, Sat and Sun 1000-1800. The best coffee in Berlin. The pastelaria also offers tasty pastries such as Portuguese croissants and cakes. Home-made soups and pasta with meat are also available. The relaxed ambience and the cushions lazily thrown on the steps outside assure this is a favourite among students.

Gorki Park, Weinbergsweg 25 (beginning of Kastanienallee), T 448 72 86. U-Bahn Rosenthaler Platz. Daily 1000-0200. Gorki Park is very well situated between Mitte and Prenz- lauerberg to draw both crowds before a night out. Alternatively you could just stay here enjoying the newspapers and the tempting Russian zakuski (canapes) which range from piroshki to aubergine caviar and sour pickles.

Kapelle, Zionskirchstr. 22-24, T 44 34 13 00, http://www.cafe-kapelle.de U-Bahn Rosenthaler Platz. Daily 0900-0300. Kapelle, with its view onto the Zionskirche, has quite a history as it was here the Red Orchestra Resistance Group (they helped Jews escape before the Soviets accidentally blew their cover) met during the Nazi era. It serves very tasty breakfasts and light snacks such as bagels and fresh soup. When in season the pumpkin soup is always very popular. It is also in a good location to catch all the Sunday flea market shoppers at Arkonaplatz.

Marcann’s, Invalidenstr. 112, T 28 38 61 71. U-Bahn Zinnowitzer Str. Mon-Fri 0700–1800, Sat 0830-1400. A modern, airy café serving tasty paninis and good coffee. In the summer the iced coffees go down a treat.

Obst & Gemüse, Oranienburgerstr. 48/49, T 282 96 47. U-Bahn Oranienburger Tor, S-Bahn Oranienburger Str. Mon-Fri from 0830, Sat and Sun from 0900. Previously a fruit and veg shop, this trendy hang-out has a great view of the street through its floor-to-ceiling windows. In the summer there is seating on benches outside. Good coffee and bagels are served.

Strandbad Mitte, Kleine Hamburger Str. 16, T 283 68 77. U-Bahn Rosenthaler Platz. Mon-Thu 0900–0120, Fri and Sat 0900-0230, Sun 1000–0130. Confusingly designed with a wall of aquarium tanks but no fish in sight, this bar/café is a great place to get value-for-money food. The range of cocktails is pretty good. Strandbad Mitte is very popular in the summer and is well situated to see what’s happening on the trendy Auguststrasse.

Suppenbörse, Dorotheenstr. 43, T 20 64 95 98. S-Bahn and U-Bahn Friedrichstr. Mon-Fri 1000-1800, Sat 1200-1630. The Suppenbörse is a great alternative to all the greasy, fast- food places in Friedrichstrasse station. The soup is cheap, very tasty and comes with as much bread as you want.
