The spacious and light bar in this intimate courtyard along with its 13 home-roasted coffees and the absolutely delectable cakes on offer is a big tempt- ation. Home-made soups and pasta with meat are also available. The relaxed ambience and the cushions lazily thrown on the steps outside assure this is a favourite among students. Gorki Park is very well situated between Mitte and Prenz- lauerberg to draw both crowds before a night out. Alternatively you could just stay here enjoying the newspapers and the tempting Russian zakuski (canapes) which range from piroshki to aubergine caviar and sour pickles. Kapelle, with its view onto the Zionskirche, has quite a history as it was here the Red Orchestra Resistance Group (they helped Jews escape before the Soviets accidentally blew their cover) met during the Nazi era. It serves very tasty breakfasts and light snacks such as bagels and fresh soup. When in season the pumpkin soup is always very popular. Previously a fruit and veg shop, this trendy hang-out has a great view of the street through its floor-to-ceiling windows. In the summer there is seating on benches outside. Confusingly designed with a wall of aquarium tanks but no fish in sight, this bar/café is a great place to get value-for-money food. The range of cocktails is pretty good. Strandbad Mitte is very popular in the summer and is well situated to see whats happening on the trendy Auguststrasse. Suppenbörse, Dorotheenstr. 43, T 20 64 95 98. S-Bahn and U-Bahn Friedrichstr. Mon-Fri 1000-1800, Sat 1200-1630. The Suppenbörse is a great alternative to all the greasy, fast- food places in Friedrichstrasse station. The soup is cheap, very tasty and comes with as much bread as you want.
