Suppenbörse, Dorotheenstr. 43, T 20 64 95 98. S-Bahn and U-Bahn Friedrichstr. Mon-Fri 1000-1800, Sat 1200-1630. The Suppenbörse is a great alternative to all the greasy, fast- food places in Friedrichstrasse station. The soup is cheap, very tasty and comes with as much bread as you want.

Telecafé, top of the Television Tower, Panoramastr. 1a, T 242 33 33, http://www.berlinerfernsehturm.de S-Bahn and U-Bahn Alexander- platz. Daily Mar-Oct 0900-0100, Nov-Feb 1000-2400. With the best view of Berlin it’s no surprise that the quality and value of the coffee and snacks leave quite a lot to be desired. However, it’s a great place to start your trip and get your bearings.

Zosch, Tucholskystr. 30, T 280 76 64. S-Bahn Oranienburger Str. Mon-Fri 1600-0200, Sat and Sun from 1200. One of the first pub/cafés of the post-reunification time, Zosch is still doing well. It has become quite a popular local with inhabitants of the surrounding buildings, serving food upstairs and hosting live music in the bar downstairs. Fridays is usually a good ska and reggae night. There are tables outside in the summer.

Zucca, Am Zwirngraben 11/12, T 24 72 12 12. S-Bahn Hackescher Markt. Mon-Fri from 0900, Sat and Sun from 1000. Situated under the S-Bahn arches this classically chic-looking café is very large and grand-looking with chandeliers and mirrors from floor to ceiling. A lovely place to meet friends with a long, impressive bar to keep you occupied.

Café am Neuen See, Lichtensteinallee 1, T 254 49 30. S-Bahn Tiergarten. Daily Mar-Oct 1000-2400, daily Nov-Feb 1000-2000. This beer garden in the middle of the Tiergarten where there are boats to rent has become a very popular summer hang-out. The food is Bavarian with Weisswurst (white sausages) going down well with a good Weissbier. There is a choice of two large, thin-crust Italian-style pizzas available in the self-service café. The candle-lit tables and tranquil lake make it very picturesque.

An einem Sonntag im August, Kastanienallee 103, T 44 05 12 28, http://www.erotisches-zur-nacht.de U-Bahn Eberswalder Str. Daily from 0900. This local, situated in the heart of Prenzlauerberg, is popular for its buffet of bread, eggs, cheese and wurst, priced at €3 and served from 0900. The café regularly hosts readings of erotic poetry. Check the website for more details.

November, Husemannstr. 15, T 442 84 25. U-Bahn Senefelderplatz. Mon-Thu 1000-0200, Fri 1000-0300, Sat 0900-0300, Sun 0900-0200. This café is famous for allowing visitors to make their own waffles at the luscious Sunday brunch which costs €7.50. It is on a quiet, tree-lined street and offers good quality food and drinks at all other times as well.

Schwarz-Sauer, Kastanienallee 13, T 448 56 33. U-Bahn Eberswalder Str. Daily 0800-0600. Schwarz- Sauer is very well situated on this trendy street full of young, arty, eccentric and alternative types and it’s even better when the tables outside are set up. Always packed, you will inevitably bump into friends, and you can keep an eye on what’s going on in hip and happening Prenzlauerberg. The bar serves cocktails and beers and sushi is also offered. A great atmosphere.

Titanic, Christburgerstr. 36, T 442 03 40. Tram 2, 3, 4, 20. Daily from 1000. The attractive, ivy-clad building on the corner of Winsstrasse and Christburgerstrasse houses a neigh- bourly café where the breakfasts are very good and generous on Sundays when there is an impressive buffet on offer. You should come early to get a place as the service is uneven depending on the staff. When the weather is good there are tables outside.
