Titanic, Christburgerstr. 36, T 442 03 40. Tram 2, 3, 4, 20. Daily from 1000. The attractive, ivy-clad building on the corner of Winsstrasse and Christburgerstrasse houses a neigh- bourly café where the breakfasts are very good and generous on Sundays when there is an impressive buffet on offer. You should come early to get a place as the service is uneven depending on the staff. When the weather is good there are tables outside. Café Schönbrunn, Volkspark Friedrichshain, T 42 02 81 91. Bus 200. This café in the park is not so easy to find but if you follow the Käthe-Nieder-Kirchnerstr. where it goes into the green then youre nearly there. Mon-Fri 1100-0100, Sat and Sun 1000-0200. The café with its glass windows and largish seating area outside offers great views of the park and the lake. In the day it is more of a meeting place for walkers but at night it turns into more of a lounge. During the Love Parade it is the location of the infamous 60-hour party. Café Hardenberg, Hardenbergstr. 10, T 312 26 44. U-Bahn Ernst- Reuter-Platz. Sun-Thu 0900-0100, Fri and Sat 0900-0200. This spacious comfortable café, situated opposite the Technical University, is ironically always packed with arty students ploughing over their books. The Milchkaffees are yummy and can be chatted over for hours and the light food and snacks available such as potato cake or apple strudel are good at reasonable prices. Schwarzes Café, Kantstr. 148, T 313 80 38. S-Bahn and U-Bahn Savignyplatz. Open 24 hours Mon, Wed-Sun. Schwarzes Café has always been an institution among the cafés in Berlin since it opened in 1978. The black-tiled toilets with windows in the walls make calls of nature that bit more exciting! Serving breakfasts and drinks around the clock except for Tuesday mornings when it is shut for an hour, it has become something of a lifesaver for night owls. Bateau Ivre, Oranienstr. 18, T 61 40 36 59. U-Bahn Görlitzer Bahnhof. Sun-Thu from 0900. A lovely, laid- back place that even by its name (drunken ship) inspires a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Good coffee as well as good food and the big glass windows make for great viewing of all the eccentrics on Oranienstrasse. What more could you want from a café? Café Adler, Friedrichstr. 206, T 251 89 65. U-Bahn Kochstr. Mon-Sat 0930-2400, Sun 0930-1900. Situated in protected buildings this café was around when the Berlin Wall was standing. The back room is extremely soporific and is one of the only places in Berlin that is no smoking. The service has become better but the cakes are still quite dry. Very popular with tourists wanting to see where Checkpoint Charlie stood and where everyone used to have their first western coffee when they had just left the east. Café Berio, Massenstr. 7, T 216 19 46, http://www.berio.de U-Bahn Nollendorfplatz. Daily 0800-0100. Always packed, this café in the very gay area of Nollendorfplatz, serves fantastic cakes and coffee. The breakfasts are delicious and as well as the traditional German kind there is also the possibility of French toast and American dishes. The milkshakes also deserve a mention. Make sure you know your gender symbols for a safe trip to the loo. Café M, Goltzstr. 33, T 216 70 92. U-Bahn Eisenacher Str., U-Bahn Nollendorfplatz. Mon-Fri 0800-0200, Sat 0900-0300, Sun 0900- 0200. This extremely cool bar/café has existed since the early 80s and has always been the perfect place to watch the young, cool yet upwardly mobile, of the big city go by whilst sipping scrumptious coffee. The electric disco music adds to the very contemporary Berlin atmosphere. Café Xenzi, Selchower Str. 31, T 622 39 29. Daily 0900-0100. U-Bahn Boddinstr. Best in the summer when youre invited to sit outside and indulge in an open-air coffee or hot chocolate with extra milk. The service is friendly and the breakfasts range from sweet cakes at 2.30 to smoked salmon at 5.80. A favourite is one of the rich tortes accompanied by an indulgent mini hot chocolate.
