Dotted Line

Acud, Veteranenstr. 21, T 449 10 67, http://www.acud.de U-Bahn Rosenthaler Platz, Tram 6, 8, 50. Daily from 2100. This culture centre is almost too good to be true. The shabby and almost dilapidated location is host to a theatre, cinema, club, café, gallery and music venue. There are regular concerts from drum 'n' bass to reggae, funk and jazz. For the more inspired there are open mike nights from Sunday to Thursday. The future of the centre is perpetually in question because of financial issues. The website is very interesting for all aspects of Acud including its history.

Cookies, Charlottenstr. 44. S-Bahn and U-Bahn Friedrichstr. Tue and Thu from 2300, first Sat of each month from 2300. Even shaking off its location-ever-changing illegal former self and settling down in Charlottenstrasse in Mitte hasn't shelved Cookies' trendy crowd. Every Tuesday and Thursday this is where the fashion-conscious of Berlin swarm in order to dance to minimalist house or electric funk in the ballroom-like club. There is a bar in what was a vault downstairs and the unisex loos are quite a shocker, especially towards the end of the evening. The club is considered such a Berlin icon that it was used in the film Lotus Style, the recent winner of the Sehnsüchte short film festival.

Grüner Salon, Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz 2, T 28 59 89 36, http://www.gruener-salon.de U-Bahn Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. Check the website for opening hours and programme. Decorated forest green as one would expect from the name and identical in appearance, save the colour, to its sister club, the Roter Salon (see below), the Grüner Salon is one of the most pleasant clubs in Berlin. It has a regular programme keeping Friday as a funk night where they play proper old school funk and soul. Lots of Aretha! There are swing and tango classes and events, as well as frequent live shows. It's also here that n-tv talkshows are produced.

Roter Salon an der Volksbühne, Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz 2, T 24 06 58 06, http://www.roter-salon.de U-Bahn Rosa-Luxemburg- Platz. Check the website for opening hours and DJ line-up. Situated around the other side of the Volksbühne complex from the Grüner Salon, the Roter Salon hosts evenings more geared to young Mitte clubbers with acts ranging from French House to the indie pop Karrera Klub. It is also a venue for live concerts and for readings. The plush, red-leather sofas create a decadent atmosphere. Regular tango night on Wednesdays.

Sage Club, Köpenicker Str. 78, T 27 59 10 82, http://www.sage-club.de Thu from 2200, Fri-Sun 2300-0900. U-Bahn Heinrich-Heine-Str. Quite an ostentatious atmosphere, but still a great place to go, even just to see the fire-breathing dragon sculpture over the dance floor and the swimming pool outside in the summer. There is a rather strict door policy but the least pretentious nights are Friday when the music is funk and Sunday when it’s garage and techno.

Icon Club, Cantian Str. 15, T 61 28 75 45, http://www.iconberlin.de U-Bahn Eberswalder Str. Fri and Sat from 2330. Entrance is about €10. The website give DJ dates, music samples and directions. Home to some of the world's finest drum 'n' bass, featuring monthly UK specials, such as DocScott and Grooverider to name a couple. Regular reggae, dance hall, ragga and hiphop nights. An underground venue, with lots of space for dancing and areas to chill out, with two bars and great visuals.

Magnet Club, Greifswalder Str. 212-213, T 42 85 13 35, http://www.magnet-club.de Tram 2,3,4. Tue from 2100, Fri and Sat from 2300, Sun from 2000. Entrance is E5-15. The website gives each month's programme. Magnet tends to attract a friendly, young crowd. During the week it plays host to young local talents such as the indie Karrera Klub but on the weekend it tends to have more pop, dance hall and funk. The club has been known to sneak in the likes of Richard Dorfmeister without informing any of the listings magazines.

Casino, Mühlenstr. 26-30, T 29 00 97 99, http://www.casino-bln.com S-Bahn Ostbahnhof, S-Bahn Warschauer Str. Fri and Sat from 2300. Don't be put off by the appearance of this warehouse club. The corrugated iron walls rising up from what looks like a deserted car park are enough to put anyone off but, despite this, Casino still packs them in with live techno and drum 'n' bass acts such as LTJ Bukem, Dr Motte and Paul van Dyk. As well as the main floor there is a lounge upstairs and other chill-out rooms with regular live DJs. Check the website for the programme.

SO36, Oranienstr. 190, T 61 40 13 06, http://www.so36.de U-Bahn Kottbusser Tor, U-Bahn Görlitzer Bahnhof. Mon from 2300, Wed and Fri from 2200, Sat from 2100, Sun from 1900. The name of this club is the postcode of Kreuzberg and has always been a favourite with residents. Enjoying cult status among the gay scene, SO36 also caters to the average party crowd. It often has live events, hosting only recently the Skatalites, but also has regular club nights. On Sundays the club hosts Café Fatal's boogie, swing and salsa dance classes and the Electric Ballroom group always plays on Mondays. See the website for the specifics.
