Berlin has welcomed the gay scene since the roaring 20s when Marlene Dietrich and Christopher Isherwood lived and entertained around Nollendorfplatz. Hitlers rise to power in 1933 and his deportation of gay people to the camps put a stop to this (outside Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn station there is a plaque to commemorate the victims).
However, now with an openly gay mayor of Berlin, the gay and lesbian scene is more vibrant than ever. Some areas are more gay than others, but around the centre its all quite mixed with lots of bars and clubs being neither one nor the other, but hosting some gay nights each week. Be more careful as you go further east as you may experience more of a right-wing element. Kreuzberg has a very liberal feel to it, whereas Nollendorfplatz is more of a male scene. Friedrichshain and Prenzlauerberg are the younger brother and sister on the scene and as a result have quite an experimental feel to them.
If its the gay scene youre looking for then you have definitely come to the right place.
Gay and Lesbian publications include Siegessäule, a free listings magazine, which you can find in most cafés, bars, shops and museums. It will give details of events, parties and burning issues. Sergej is another free listings magazine that is available almost everywhere but is a bit more glossy.
