D Hotel-Pension Elba, Bleibtreustr. 26, T 88 17 504, F 88 04 59 55, http://members.aol.com/hotelelba S-Bahn Savignyplatz. Attractive both inside and out, Elba has a comfortable feel and a friendly, informal atmosphere. Sizes vary among the 16 rooms but high ceilings give the place an airy feel. The decor is largely modern but with occasional odd pieces of carving. D Hotel-Pension Imperator, Meinekestr. 5, T 88 14 181, F 88 51 919. U-Bahn Uhlandstr., U-Bahn Kurfürstendamm. This second-floor hotel has excellent modern art, rugs, some original 1900 features and a very large dopey dog. It's a worn, homely place, informal and friendly. It's also about as central as you can be in Berlin's western side without paying a fortune. D Pension Gudrun, Bleibtreustr. 17, T 88 16 462, F 88 37 476. S-Bahn Savignyplatz. This small pension (only four rooms) is deceptively spacious: a family would quite easily fit in one of the larger rooms. The place is given a cosy and homely atmosphere by old but never ostentatious furniture and the multi-lingual enthusiasm of its owner. D-E City Pension Alexandra, Wielandstr. 32, T 88 12 107, F 88 57 78 18. U-Bahn Adenauerplatz, S-Bahn Savignyplatz. On the second and third floors of a quiet block in the same street as Pension Dittberner, the Alexandra has wooden floors and high ceilings but rather uninspiring decor. The breakfast room is light and inviting but some of the bedrooms look rather dated. D-E Hotel am Park, Sophie-Charlotten-Str. 57-58, T 32 13 485, http://www.pension-ampark.de U-Bahn Sophie-Charlotte-Platz. For anyone wanting to stay in the tree-lined avenues of Charlottenburg, this is a small, friendly and good-value option facing a park. Some rooms have balconies but the interior design is a strangely eclectic and largely 70s and 80s mix. D-E Hotel Pension Columbus, Meinekerstr. 5, T/F 88 15 061. U-Bahn Uhlandstr., U-bahn Kurfürstendamm. On the third floor of an old building very near the Kurfürsten- damm, the Columbus has a laid-back quality. Quiet rooms, with a mix of old and new furniture, have views over courtyards with trees. A very German-looking breakfast room is the scene for a good breakfast including freshly baked rolls and 10 different types of tea. D-E Pension Kettler, Bleibtreustr. 19, T 88 34 949, F 88 24 228, http://www.kurfuerstendamm.de This well looked after Bohemian treasure trove has been here since 1900 and its current owner since the 1970s. Over this time she's built up a large collection of interesting art which covers the corridor walls from floor to ceiling. The classy furniture and decoration appear to have changed very little in the hundred years of the hotel, but don't seem at all worn or decrepit. The "Toulouse Lautrec" room in particular seems to have come straight out of turn-of-the-century Montmartre. Breakfast is taken in the rooms. D-E Pension Peters, Kantstr. 146, T 31 22 278, F 31 23 519, http://www.pension-peters-berlin.de S-Bahn Savignyplatz. Friendly and efficient with simple modern furniture, pine floors, colourful rugs and some good contemporary art, Pension Peters is a good, cheaper option near the Kurfürstendamm. The pension also has apartments for rent, two nearby, and eight near Hackescher Markt in Mitte, starting at E60 a night, without breakfast. D-E Pension Viola Nova, Kantstr. 146, T 31 57 260, F 31 23 314, http://www.violanova.de S-Bahn Savignyplatz. The sunny, front reception area and breakfast room of this hotel doubles as an exhibition space. Rooms vary in size but are all quite comfortable. Without at least a smattering of German you might struggle, however.
