D-E Pension Viola Nova, Kantstr. 146, T 31 57 260, F 31 23 314, http://www.violanova.de S-Bahn Savignyplatz. The sunny, front reception area and breakfast room of this hotel doubles as an exhibition space. Rooms vary in size but are all quite comfortable. Without at least a smattering of German you might struggle, however. E Pension Knessebeck, Knessebeckstr. 86, T 31 27 255, F 31 39 507. U-Bahn Ernst-Reuter-Pl, S-Bahn Savignyplatz. A pension with a hostel atmosphere, the Knessebeck is a friendly good-value option very close to the smart eateries and shops of Savignyplatz. 'En suite' rooms have box-showers rather perfunctorily placed in the corner, chairs can be a little wobbly and the big buffet breakfast is served in a red and green room, but for this price in this location you can't really complain. E-F Hotel-Pension Cortina, Kantstr. 140, T 31 39 059, F 31 27 396. S-Bahn Savignyplatz. When you are told by the talkative owner "If you want your feet kissed, go somewhere else", she means it. What you see is what you get here, the only frill being the "opulant" buffet breakfast. A shower in the room means a rather claustrophobic version of a phone box, and furniture is old without being antique. It's also very friendly, however. E Pension Kreuzberg, Grossbeerenstr. 64, T 25 11 362, F 25 10 638, http://www.pension-kreuzberg.de U-Bahn Mehringdamm. Thirteen large, simple rooms are the result of two floors of dark stairs. There's no lift and none of the rooms are en suite, but it's a welcoming place and if you want hostel prices without the frills or the hostellers, this could be a reasonable option. F Die Fabrik, Schlesische Str. 18, T 61 17 116, F 61 82 974. U-Bahn Schlesisches Tor. A conversion of an old factory, Fabrik has a rather worn minimalist industrial stylishness, but one without much in the way of frills. Service is brisk and rooms (dorms, singles, doubles and triples) are decidedly basic. B-C Das Kleine Apartmenthotel, Kurfürstenstr. 15, T 0331 27 91 10, F 0331 27 91 11, http://www.hollaenderhaus.potsdam.de S-Bahn Potsdam Hbf On a relatively busy street on the northern edge of Potsdam's most interesting area, the Holländisches Viertel (Dutch Quarter), these hyper-modern apartments are kitted out with ample working space for business guests, but are also great places to stay for short-term visitors. From modern textiles and sofas to hi-fi and TVs that roll along runners on the ceiling, enabling them to be positioned at different points in the room, the design is high-tech, but also comfortable, with wooden floors, small kitchens and well-lit bathrooms. C Hotel am Luisenplatz, Luisenplatz 5, T 0331 971 900, F 0331 971 90 19, http://www.hotel-luisenplatz.de S-Bahn Potsdam Hbf As the name suggests, this hotel sits right on Luisenplatz, the town's focal (though not quite central) point. From rooms at the front you can look across the square at Potsdam's Brandenburg Gate and the main street of Brandenburger Strasse beyond. The interior is burgundy carpets and mahogany furniture and 11 suites have balconies and small kitchens. Ask about special rates for 'active weekends' and a 'midweek golf arrangement'. The newly opened Bed and Breakfast am Luisenplatz around the corner in the aptly named Zimmerstrasse is essentially a cheaper (E) and more modern annexe of the hotel. D Altstadt Potsdam, Dortustr. 9/10, T 0331 28 49 90, F 0331 28 49 930, http://www.hotel-altstadt-potsdam.de S-Bahn Potsdam Hbf. In the centre of Potsdam's old cobbled centre, this sturdy and handsome old building has 29 rooms and, judging by the visitors' book, plenty of satisfied customers. The decor is standard modern hotelesque but it's friendly and just off the main street, Brandenburger Strasse. D Hotel Alter Markt, Alter Markt 11a, T 65 57 386, F 65 57 388, http://www.berlin-info.de/hotel-alter-markt S-Bahn Köpenick. If you're keen to stay outside of central Berlin, this is quite a reasonable option. In the middle of the old cobbled centre of Köpenick, the Hotel Alter Markt has modern rooms facing the Heimatmuseum and an old square. Staff are friendly and there's a buffet breakfast. However, it's a fair walk or a tram ride from the station, and at the front of the hotel the sound of cars driving over the cobbles is noticeable.
