Haus der Kulturen der Welt, John-Foster-Dulles Allee 10, T 39 78 71 75, http://www.hkw.de">http://www.hkw.de S-Bahn Bellevue, Bus 100. The House of World Cultures, located in the Tiergarten, is a leading centre for contemporary arts and a venue for projects designed to break artistic boundaries. It is Berlin's largest World Music venue. Fine arts, theatre, music, literature and film are shown and heard here, making it one of the city's most interesting cultural centres.

Werkstatt der Kulturen, Wissmannstr. 31-42, T 622 20 24, http://www.werkstatt-der-kulturen.de">http://www.werkstatt-der-kulturen.de U-Bahn Hermannplatz. This small space is used very well in promoting the diverse nature of the city. Art, theatre, fashion and music from Spain, India and the Ukraine and other countries exist here, creating a very special atmosphere.

There is a fully formed and growing jazz scene in Berlin with around 40 venues throughout the city. The music tends to be more traditional jazz rather than anything else, but there are jam sessions and young contemporary talent to be found around town too. Jazz has its own radio station in the city – JazzRadio (101.9 Fm), which also has a website in both English and German (http://www. Jazzradio.net). If visiting in the autumn try and make it to the Berlin JazzFest.

B-Flat, Rosenthalestr. 13, T 280 63 49. U-Bahn Weinmeisterstr. Daily from 2100. Previously a Geheimtip (secret tip) for jazz fans and musicians, B-Flat has now turned more mainstream but you can still find the odd post-Headhunters Herbie Hancock aspirants. The club also hosts tango and salsa nights.

Bebop Bar, Willibald-Alexis-Str. 40, T 694 11 01, http://www.bebop-bar.de U-Bahn Mehringdamm. Concerts from 2200 Tue, Fri-Sun. More of a jazz pub than a jazz club, Bebop Bar offers live music five days a week. The restrained lighting makes for a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Along with jazz, folk music nights are often hosted.

Junction Bar, Gneisenaustr. 18, T 694 66 02, http://www.junction- bar.de U-Bahn Gneisenaustr. Daily 1100-0500. Concerts normally around 2200. This jazz club located in a cellar on the busy Gneisenaustrasse hosts nightly concerts, whether it be jazz, blues, funk or even rap – as long as there's a jazzy feel. There is always dancing after concerts with music provided by DJs. The bar can get very packed so make sure you get there early.

Quasimodo, Kantstr. 12a, T 312 80 86, http://www.quasimodo.de S-Bahn and U-Bahn Zoologischer Garten. Concerts daily from 2200. A legendary jazz bar that has played host to many world-famous artists including Prince. A good student night is Wednesday when there are jam sessions and the entrance is less expensive and includes a drink at the bar.

A visitor could stay in Berlin for a year and still not experience all the city has to offer in terms of classical music. With seven orchestras, three opera houses and a plethora of independent companies the city is indeed well endowed. This is a result of the legacy of communism and unlimited state support for the arts, as well as German musical tradition. The existence of two Berlins also contrib- uted to the number of music companies. The state support for the arts remains very strong and was seen most recently in the signing- up of conductor Sir Simon Rattle to the Berlin Philharmonie at a time when the city was verging on bankruptcy. There are constant spats with the government over funding, but when the likes of conductor Daniel Barenboim put their foot down the money seems to come. It’s debatable how long the nearly bankrupt city can maintain such provision but many argue it is necessary for Berlin's economy. The city is also home to many music academies that draw some of the world's best young music talent. These institutions regularly host recitals by soloists as well as providing a venue for other musicians.

Philharmonie, Herbert-von-Karajan-Str. 1, T 25 48 81 32, http://www.berlin-philharmonic.com S-Bahn and U-Bahn Potsdamer Platz. The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the world's most celebrated, and the concert hall is one of the world's most bold and successful attempts at acoustic modernism. Sir Simon Rattle became conductor of the orchestra in 2002.
