This restaurant in one of the alleys off the Nikolaiviertel and as an inn is one of the best known in town. The building is a reconstruction of the original 16th-century inn and its menu offers traditional Berlin food. If you fancy pig’s knuckle and rolled, pickled herrings this is the place to go. Monsieur Vuong has the much sought-after ability of not only attracting a cluster of prominent Berliners normally from the media and arts, but also drawing the regular young street crowd. And at €6.50 for the Indochinese menu it’s no wonder why. Rumour has it that the portions have become smaller but the food’s so good you’ll want to come back anyway. Notice the blown-up photo of a very good-looking young Asian sailor on the wall. The sushi ranges from €2.15 to 15 and is tasty but sometimes a little too dry. The internet is expensive at €2.15 for half an hour. If you can overcome the over-the-top American interior design then the food here is not actually that bad. Daily from 1000. Prints of the artist’s work adorn the ochre and brown walls of this Mexican restaurant. However, the female equivalent of Salvador Dalí would turn in her grave if she saw the menu. The food is more Santa Monica than Mexican but, despite this geographical and culinary error, it is still lip-smacking. The pancakes at breakfast time can be delectable, depending on the cook, and the guacamole and fried chicken are always done well. Named after the bar in Havana that Ernest Hemingway, Al Capone and Pablo Neruda used to frequent, this Cuban restaurant bar offers guacamole, beans, rice and tapas as well as intoxicating cocktails such as caipirinhas and mojitos. Here you can enjoy classics such as beef stroganoff but at a fairly inflated €14.90. The breakfasts are also expensive but worth it as there seems to be so much, and the garnishes, like horse- radish, taste especially good. The Russian dishes are done well. Speed of service leaves something to be desired. Daily from 0930 (summer) 1100-2400 (winter) This restaurant is quite a local hang-out. Situated directly on Kollwitz Platz it is somewhere that attracts young and old Berliners alike. There is both international and German cuisine with some interesting touches such as caviar potatoes and turkey with mango sauce but many of the dishes are fairly straight- forward and taste very good. At weekends a delicious and quite substantial brunch is served.
