Yosoy, Rosenthaler Str. 37, T 28 39 12 13. S-Bahn Hackescher Markt, U-Bahn Weinmeisterstr. Daily from 1100. The feeling that youre in a North African souk is all pervasive when visiting this late-night haunt. Bottles of red wine seem to be consumed by the gallon while the delicious tapas are served on tiled counters. It is very pleasant and laid-back amongst the super smart Mitte bars. Zum Nussbaum, Am Nussbaum 3, T 242 30 95. S-Bahn and U-Bahn Alexanderplatz. Daily from 1200. This restaurant in one of the alleys off the Nikolaiviertel and as an inn is one of the best known in town. The building is a reconstruction of the original 16th-century inn and its menu offers traditional Berlin food. If you fancy pigs knuckle and rolled, pickled herrings this is the place to go. In the summer you can sit in the small pretty garden. Popular with tourists. Monsieur Vuong, Alte Schönhauser Str. 46, T 30 87 26 43, http://www.monsieurvuong.de U-Bahn Rosa Luxemburg Platz. Mon- Sat 1200-2400, Sun 1400-0200. Monsieur Vuong has the much sought-after ability of not only attracting a cluster of prominent Berliners normally from the media and arts, but also drawing the regular young street crowd. And at 6.50 for the Indochinese menu its no wonder why. Rumour has it that the portions have become smaller but the foods so good youll want to come back anyway. Notice the blown-up photo of a very good-looking young Asian sailor on the wall. This is Monsieur Vuong himself, now in his 70s. Surf and Sushi, Oranienburger Str. 17, T 28 38 48 98, http://www.surfandsushi.de S-Bahn Hackescher Markt. Mon-Fri 1200-2400, Sat and Sun 1300-2400. Served by an army of men and women all in black but with seemingly only one chef this conveniently located sushi and internet café remains popular, probably due to the fact that on Monday, Wednesday and Friday Happy Hour lasts all day. The sushi ranges from 2.15 to 15 and is tasty but sometimes a little too dry. The internet is expensive at 2.15 for half an hour. Deliveries are also available. Tony Romas, Marlene-Dietrich-Platz 3, T 25 29 58 30. S-Bahn and U-Bahn Potsdamer Platz. Daily from 1130. If you can overcome the over-the-top American interior design then the food here is not actually that bad. The house specialty is spare ribs at 12, which cant be too fattening as this diner is a favourite with the dancers over the road at Cats. Frida Kahlo, Lychener Str. 37, T 445 70 16, http://www.fridakahlo.de U-Bahn Eberswalder Str. Daily from 1000. Prints of the artists work adorn the ochre and brown walls of this Mexican restaurant. However, the female equivalent of Salvador Dalí would turn in her grave if she saw the menu. The food is more Santa Monica than Mexican but, despite this geographical and culinary error, it is still lip-smacking. The pancakes at breakfast time can be delectable, depending on the cook, and the guacamole and fried chicken are always done well. The cocktails served between 1800 and 2100 are 4.90. La Bodeguita del Medio, Lychener Str. 6, T 442 96 98. U-Bahn Eberswalder Str. Daily from 1800. Named after the bar in Havana that Ernest Hemingway, Al Capone and Pablo Neruda used to frequent, this Cuban restaurant bar offers guacamole, beans, rice and tapas as well as intoxicating cocktails such as caipirinhas and mojitos. The salsa and son music also give this place a real Latin American feel. Pasternak, Knaackstr. 22-24, T 441 33 99, http://www.restaurant- pasternak.de U-Bahn Senefelder Platz. Daily 1000-0200. Here you can enjoy classics such as beef stroganoff but at a fairly inflated 14.90. The breakfasts are also expensive but worth it as there seems to be so much, and the garnishes, like horse- radish, taste especially good. The Russian dishes are done well. Speed of service leaves something to be desired. On Tuesday and Thursday there is live music that ranges from Russian songs from the 30s to the 60s, to Russian Swing and Folklore as well as yiddish favourites. Restauration 1900, Husemannstr. 1, T 442 24 94, http://www.restauration-1900.de U-Bahn Eberswalder Str., U-Bahn Senefelder Platz. Daily from 0930 (summer) 1100-2400 (winter) This restaurant is quite a local hang-out. Situated directly on Kollwitz Platz it is somewhere that attracts young and old Berliners alike. There is both international and German cuisine with some interesting touches such as caviar potatoes and turkey with mango sauce but many of the dishes are fairly straight- forward and taste very good. At weekends a delicious and quite substantial brunch is served.
