Restauration 1900, Husemannstr. 1, T 442 24 94, http://www.restauration-1900.de U-Bahn Eberswalder Str., U-Bahn Senefelder Platz. Daily from 0930 (summer) 1100-2400 (winter) This restaurant is quite a local hang-out. Situated directly on Kollwitz Platz it is somewhere that attracts young and old Berliners alike. There is both international and German cuisine with some interesting touches such as caviar potatoes and turkey with mango sauce but many of the dishes are fairly straight- forward and taste very good. At weekends a delicious and quite substantial brunch is served. Der Imbiss, Kastanienallee 49. Tram 13, 15, 50. Daily from 1800 till late depending on the owners mood. Despite having no name this Imbiss has proved extremely popular after its opening at the beginning of 2002. The owner, Gordon, an eccentric Canadian musician, has combined excellent quality food at cheap prices with an Imbiss size and casualness. The food is Southeast Asian and dishes such as tandoori fish cooked in something similar to a kiln must be tasted. The fruit cocktails are fantastic and superb for hangovers. Listen out for the Mongolian chanting or epic film soundtrack. Kommandantur Pizzeria, Knaackstr. 18, T 44 03 14 68. U-Bahn Senefelder Platz. Daily from 1600. This is a standard pizzeria in an old-fashioned Italian tavern that offers above average food at a standard price. Its location opposite the Wasserturm (Water Tower), which some consider to be the heart of Prenzlauerberg, makes it more notable than most pizza parlours. Schulter Junge, corner of Lychener Str. and Danziger Str. U-Bahn Eberswalder Str. This restaurant is more like a real German kneipe or pub. Dont be alarmed by the strange looks that you get as you walk through the door but simply go through and sit down at one of the tables in the back. The food is typically German and delicious with generous, inexpensive portions and friendly service. The schnitzel and eierpfannkuchen (pancakes) with apple sauce must be tried. Thüringer Stuben, Stargarder Str. 28, T 446 33 39. S-Bahn Prenzlauer Allee. Mon-Sat 1600-0100. If wood wainscoting and heavy meat cooking are your thing then this is the place to go. The menu offers specialties from Thüring (a region in the middle of Germany renowned for its food), such as the famous Bratwurst (fried sausage) or the more delicate lamb fillets with garlic and beetroot salad. Very good traditional German food. Voland, Wichertstr. 63, T 444 04 22, http://www.voland-café;.de S-Bahn and U-Bahn Schönhauser Allee. Daily from 1800. It is easy to see the inspiration for this restaurant. If the name doesnt give it away then the pictures inside should all illustrations of Bulgakovs masterpiece The Master and Margarita. The locals, however, are not only concerned with literature (readings regularly take place here, as well as live music) but also with peasant-like Russian food. The fact that most of the voices heard are Russian gives the food a good recommendation. Sud Vino e Cucina Mediterranea, Hufelandstr. 21, T 42 80 18 46. Tram 2,3,4. Mon-Sat 1200-2300. Simple and chic, this Italian restaurant offers above average food such as its fish specialties and freshly made pasta. The tables outside in the summer are great to people-watch and the house wine, made ecologically in Lazio, is recommended. Lola, Kopernikusstr. 3, T 29 66 70 28, http://www.r-w-b.de/ puertalatina/lola S-Bahn and U-Bahn Warschauer Str., Tram 20. Mon-Sat from 1700, Sun from 1000. In this genial and stress-free Spanish restaurant/bar you really get a taste of Iberian life. The tapas and wine choice are excellent and on Thursdays and Sundays after 2000 original Spanish videos are shown, free of charge, in an adjoining room. The calamares salad is very tasty and the mixed plate of starters to share is good value for money. Florian, Grolmannstr. 52, T 31 39 184. S-Bahn Savignyplatz. Daily 1800-0300. A solid German restaurant with natural style, class and an almost 20-year-long tradition. After 2300, when they start to serve their bratwurst (fried sausage) with sauerkraut (best order 10 pieces, they are very small and very delicious), Florian turns into an inspired artists boozer.
