Florian, Grolmannstr. 52, T 31 39 184. S-Bahn Savignyplatz. Daily 1800-0300. A solid German restaurant with natural style, class and an almost 20-year-long tradition. After 2300, when they start to serve their bratwurst (fried sausage) with sauerkraut (best order 10 pieces, they are very small and very delicious), Florian turns into an inspired artists boozer. Fish n Chips, Yorckstr.15. U-Bahn Mehringdamm, U-Bahn Möckernbrücke. Mon-Fri 1200-2400, Sat and Sun 1400-2400. Reputedly the only Imbiss in Berlin where you can get proper British fish and chips. At least thats what they think. The fish and chips are quite good but not quite in the style we get in Britain and theres not a newspaper in sight. Still, theyre pretty tasty and you can also buy Heinz Baked Beans and Marmite. The enormous bellied grumpy owner could, however, be straight out of your local chippie. Zur Henne, Leuschnerdamm 25, T 614 77 30. U-Bahn Kottbusser Tor. Wed-Sun from 1900. This traditional restaurant on the banks of the Spree is home to not only the best chicken in town but also to one of the most notable relics of a bygone age. Behind the bar there is a letter from President JF Kennedy apologizing for not visiting the restaurant on his 1961 visit to Berlin. The menu is half a roast chicken with either potato salad or sauerkraut and costs 6. The sauerkraut is recommended. There is no cutlery for the chicken just eat it with your fingers. One of the best atmospheres in town. Pranzo e Cena, Goltzstr. 32, T 216 35 14. U-Bahn Nollendor- fplatz, U-Bahn Eisenacher Str. Daily 1200-2400. With a fairly simple camel-and-creamy-yellow interior and no excessive frills this restaurant has managed to overcome the curse of this corner where many other establishments have opened and closed within months. Pranzo e Cena offers uncomplicated and very good Italian food, such as home-made ravioli parcels. A lunch menu costs 7.50, the evening menu, 12.
