If youve only got two days, spend them in Bilbao. While it lacks the superb natural setting of San Sebastián, or Vitoria's peaceful picturesqueness, its a vibrant and honest thinktank, and the premier symbol of the regions rejuvenation and pride in post-Franco Spain. The Guggenheim Museum is a world-class sight on a par with the Golden Gate Bridge or the Sydney Opera House. You might want to head out to Gernika or Mundaka for half a day; both are within easy reach. For seaside appeal stay in San Sebastián, and visit Getaria for a change of scene. With a little longer at your disposal, you might want to spend two days in Bilbao, a day in San Sebastián, and perhaps stop in Lekeitio or another coastal town in between for fresh grilled fish and beach time. Or you could head down to Vitoria, spend a night in Laguardia, and enjoy a bit of wine tasting. City lovers might want to simply spend time in the three provincial capitals: an easily achievable aim given the good connections. A day each in San Sebastián and Vitoria will give you a good feel for their charms; Bilbao deserves two days if you've got them.
