With a week on hand, you could base yourself in Bilbao for the entire time and take day trips. Depending on your timescale, you may have to choose between San Sebastián and Vitoria, if you don't want to rush things. Hit the former if you fancy beaches, sunsets over the water, and style. Choose the latter for peace, Basqueness and class. If you don't mind moving about, your trip should really include Laguardia, especially if you are a fan of wine and medieval villages; it's a gem. The inland hill towns such as Oñati and Elorrio are proudly Basque, have a noble architectural heritage and are both good spots for striking out with a pair of sturdy boots and a picnic. Basque heritage is divided between these hills, with their distinctive baserri farmhouses, and the coast, with its plethora of fishing villages. Historic Lekeitio, Getaria and Hondarribia, with their beautiful harbours, are worth visiting, while Mundaka is a tiny surfing mecca. Any of the beaches would reward for either a night's stopover or a relaxing stay of a few days.
