The major month for Basque festivals, you can spend nearly the whole of August at the major fiestas of the three cities. Fiesta de la Virgen Blanca (4th-9th) in Vitoria, the city's major knees-up comes thoroughly recommended. Getaria celebrates the Festival of San Salvador (7th). Every four years a re-enactment of the landing of Elkano is staged (next one in 2003). Festival of San Nicolás (12th) is celebrated in the picturesque old port of Getxo. The Aste Nagusia (week before the 15th) or ‘big week’ kicks off in San Sebastián with world-renowned fireworks exhibitions. The major fiestas of Gernika and Markina (15th-16th). Bilbao's turn for a big week (Saturday after the 15th); a boisterous mixture of everything; concerts, corridas, traditional Basque sports, and serious drinking. San Sebastián tempts fate by commemorating the Great Fire of 1813 (31st) with a huge display of candles.
