Arrana, C Juan Calzada 6, Gernika. A vibrant Basque bar with a lively young crowd spilling outside at weekends. Bar Irritz, Calle Zaharri, Oñati. A late-opening weekend bar on Oñatis main street. Popular techno and a friendly scene. Lezika, Cuevas de Santamamiñe, Kortezubi, Gernika. The whole of Vizcaya seems to descend on the beer garden here at weekends with kids and dogs in tow; the restaurant is worthwhile, and better value than the meagre raciones on offer at the bar. Metropol, Cnr C Unamuno and Iparragirre, Gernika. A cavernous and comradely bar, open later than anywhere and then some. Parra Taberna, Elorrio. A peaceful bar with tables on the main square and a beautiful glass and stone interior. Sakris In Markinas old town back streets, this tiny bar, in a 17th-century palace, is one of the more atmospheric choices in relaxed Markina. Ku-Kua, Kanttoipe, Ondarroa. A very lively bar that gets very full and goes on very late. La Leñera. A friendly bar in Mundakas tiny back streets. No pintxos but plenty of seats. Nasa Kalea, in Ondarroa, is well-stocked with bars, many of which are temples to Basque rock, which is heavily identified with the independence movement. Two worth dropping in on are Apallu, at number 30, and Sansonategi.
