Distinction between different types of hostelry is never clear in Spain. What starts the day as a coffee 'n' croissant stop for office workers might end it with the lights fading, the music pumping and frighteningly large gin and tonics being poured after dark. The listings in this section are generally places that open late, close late, and don't serve food. Many bars only open at the weekend; Basques aren't big midweek revellers. All three cities have plenty of barlife; Bilbao inevitably offers more options, although in summer San Sebastián gives it a run for its money. The clubbing scene in the Basque lands isn't great. Bona fide clubs (discotecas) are fairly few in number, and many are solely devoted to the Spanish Top Four. San Sebastián has a number of high-profile discotecas which complement its beachside scene, but more interesting venues are to be found in Bilbao. Many clubs don't open their doors until after midnight, and keep things going until well after dawn. Few are open during the week.
