Caché Latino, C Ripa 3. This riverside bar is a sweaty den of merengue and salsa with a slightly volatile atmosphere but pretty authentic music. Watch your possessions closely.

Café Indie, C Doctor Areilza 34. Trendier and sleeker than the name might suggest. Sofas downstairs, and a bar and dancefloor upstairs. At weekends this makes some of the other clubs look empty, with both music and crowd that are suspiciously on the mainstream side of indie. British retro gets some play too.

Congreso, Muelle de Uribitarte 4. A classic bakalao and house venue, hardly cutting edge but a mainstay of the Bilbao scene. Doesn’t really get into its stride until four or so in the morning. Mixed crowd. Open Friday and Saturday nights.

Conjunto Vacío, C Muelle de la Merced 4. Live music venue with a relaxed atmosphere and lined with characterful trappings from the world of showbiz. Music ranges from rock to jazz.

Distrito 9, Alameda Rekalde 18. Still probably the best spot in Bilbao for house music. Goes very late and is quite a dressy scene. Drag shows and a €10 cover.

Kafe Antzokia, C San Vicente 2, T 944-244625,http://www.kafeantzokia. com An ex-cinema fast becoming a Bilbao icon, this is a live venue for anything from death metal to Euskara poetry, and features two spacious floors with bars which go late and loud at weekends.

La Lola, C Bailén 10. €5 at the door. Decorated in industrial style with sheet-metal and graffiti, this is a good Saturday night club that varies in character from fairly cheesy dance to pretty heavy garage. Open until 0600, and then runs as a Sunday day club from 2330.

New Garden, C Lehendakari Aguirre 13, T 944-760056. Next to the Casa Vasca restaurant, this place has a double identity. During the week it features some fairly nostalgic music with older couples dancing. At weekends it fills with students and the pop goes on late.

Zodiakos, C Euskal Herria s/n (corner of Telletxe), T 944-604059. This squiggly bar in the heart of Getxo is one of the area’s best, with a terrace, pintxos, and service with a smile. Underneath is Alai, a weekend discoteca.
