Euskadis political awareness and antipathy to Spanish conservatism means that the cities at least are among the most tolerant in the peninsula. While theres not a scene to compare with the bigger cities of Barcelona or Madrid, there are plenty of gay and lesbian venues, and several organizations. Overt displays of homophobia are rare, and couples on the street shouldnt encounter any unpleasantness, at least in the cities. Gay tourism has increased dramatically in Bilbao since the opening of the Guggenheim, and it has the busiest and best scene. San Sebastián, particularly in summer, also sees plenty of activity. Vitoria is quieter but still has a handful of places to go. The pink zone in Bilbao is across the river from the Casco Viejo near the Puente de la Merced. The Casco Viejo has a few options, which are less scene-y.
