Bilbao is a very walkable city, as are San Sebastián and Vitoria. For further-flung parts of Bilbao, such as the beach or the bus station, or to save tired legs, the Metro is an excellent service. New, fast andefficient, it’s a claustrophobe’s dream and runs until about midnight Sunday to Thursday, until about 0200 on Friday nights, and all night Saturdays. A single fare costs €1, a day pass is €3. There’s one main line running through the city and out to the beach suburbs, the recently opened second line will eventually reach the coast too.
Although there’s a reasonable network of local bus services in Bilbao, they are only generally useful for a handful of destinations; these are indicated in the text.
Bilbao’s long-absent trams are shortly to make a welcome comeback and will hopefully ease traffic congestion in the city centre.
