The genial owner has equipped it with a gym and sauna, and there is free parking. Rooms come with TV, air-con, and phone. C/E Hostal Mendéz, C Santa María 13, T 944-160364. 1, E2, Dignified building with castle-sized doors and an entrance guarded by iron dogs. The first floor has hostal-grade rooms with new bathrooms. This beautiful pensión is caringly lined in stone, wood, and ideosyncratic objects. With delicious breakfasts and homely rooms, you might want to move in. A reasonable if overpriced Casco Viejo option that has seen slightly better days, but has spacious rooms with or without bathroom, all-night access, and a bar. The rooms with balcony are nice, but can be noisy in the mornings. E Hostal Gurea, C Bidebarrieta 14, T 944-163299. Carefully refurbished and well-scrubbed establishment on one of Casco Viejo´s principal axes. Welcoming and cheerfully vague about bookings. Usually request a 0100 curfew. E Hostal Mardones, C Jardines 4, T 944-153105. Run by a welcoming and chatty owner and very well situated in pintxo heartland. Entered by the side of a newsstand, the pensión is fitted in attractive dark wood, and both exterior and interior rooms are pleasant, light and airy.
