This grand old hotel, set on noisy Plaza Moyúa, is considerably more luxurious inside than out. Its refurbished neo-classical ambience has colonnaded Einstein, Lorca, and Hemingway among other notables. Well located on the citys main shopping street, this four-star hotel has a cheerful entrance and helpful service. Its undergoing a gradual renovation, and the rooms in the newer section are much the better for it. There are excellent weekend rates, with savings up to 40%. Check the website for current offers. A modern but characterful five-star hotel in classic style. While there are better value hotels, its popular for its genuinely helpful service and excellent restaurant. Behind a mirrored façade which bizarrely dwarfs the older building in front are comfortable executive-style rooms, overlook a comparatively quiet square. Theres a terrace, and pianists make the odd scheduled appearance in the bar. More character than many in this category and cheerful. L Hotel Jardines de Albia, C San Vicente 6, T 944-354140, F 944-354142. Metro: Abando. Set in a peaceful back street near the gardens for which it is named, and fronted by a mermaid, this is another upmarket hotel that offers substantial weekend discounts. Fairly attractively furnished, and the rooms are more homely than might be expected. Spa and hydrotherapy centre in the building. A Hotel Hesperia Zubialde, Camino de la Ventosa 34, T 944-008100, F 944-008110. Metro: San Mamés. This is the nicest of the cluster of hotels catering to the trade fair hall and congress centre at this end of town. In a free-standing restored building away from the downtown bustle, its modern and efficient but pleasant. Theres a terrace café and a very reasonably priced restaurant. Its got sweeping views over the river, but the waterfront beautification definitely hasnt reached here yet. B Hotel Vista Alegre, C Pablo Picasso 13, T 944-431450, F 944-431454. Euskotren: Zabálburu. A characterful if faded hotel near the bullring, with lots of old Basque prints, a certain stuffy plushness, and considerate staff. C Hostal Central, Alameda Rekalde 35, T 944-106339, F 944-701576. Metro: Moyúa. True to its name, this newish option is right in the centre of the city, a block from Plaza Moyúa in prime shopping territory. The rooms are quite attractive, and theres a good feeling about the place; they seem more at home with tourists than business travellers. Internet access available.
