A Hotel Los Chopos, Av Los Chopos 2, T 944-912255, F 944-912802. Metro: Neguri. A stylish hotel with a garden, peaceful despite the busy road. Away from Getxo’s main bustle, it’s attractively, if formally, furnished with cheerfull, welcoming bedrooms.

A Hotel Los Tamarises, Muelle de Ereaga 2, T 944-910005, F 944-911310. Metro: Neguri. Another beachfront option, not as pretty as the Igeretxe but with considerably plusher rooms and similarly good views. There’s a huge café-restaurant ensemble with a terrace that’s a prime Getxo meeting point in summer.

B Hotel Neguri, Algortako Etorbidea 14, T 944-910509. Metro: Neguri. On the main road, this boutique hotel has seen sprucer days but is charming and is refreshingly un-businessy.

D Pensión Usategi, C Landene 2, T 944-913918. Metro: Bidezabal. Well placed on the headland above pretty Arrigunaga beach. The rooms are clean and cool, and some have great views.

E Pensión Areeta, C Mayor 13 (Las Arenas), T 944-638136. Metro: Areeta. Near the metro of the same name and a iron bar’s throw from the Puente Vizcaya, this is a good place in the heart of the trendy Las Arenas district of Getxo.

Camping Arrien, Bld Uresarantze s/n, T 94-6770878, F 94-6774480. Metro: Plentzia. Although not as convenient for Bilbao as the Sopelana (below), this campsite, connected regularly by bus with the Plentzia metro stop, is handy for the beach and boasts all the facilities. The bungalows are reasonable value for four or more. Open all year.

Camping Sopelana, Ctra Bilbao-Plentzia s/n, T 94-6762120. Metro: Sopelana. Very handy for the Metro into Bilbao, this is the most convenient campsite within range of the city. Well-equipped with facilities, and in easy range of the shops, it’s right by the beach too. Reasonable value bungalows available.

B Hotel Gernika, C Carlos Gangoiti 17, T 94-6254948, F 94-6255874. Gernika’s best hotel is nothing exceptional, with uninteresting rooms in an ugly brick building on the edge of town. There’s a bar and café, and the service is helpful.

B Hotel Katxi, Morga/Andra Mari s/n, T 94-6270740, F 94-6270245. A few kilometres west of Gernika in the hamlet of Morga is this excellent rural hotel. The rooms, some larger than others, are extremely comfortable, and there’s a friendly lounge area. It’s a great place to get away from things a little, in a warm atmosphere. The same owners run a good asador next door.
