E Hospedería de Arantzazu, Arantzazu 29, T 943-781313, F 943-781314. Right next to the basilica, offering fairly simple rooms in a slightly pious atmosphere.

F Echeverria, C Barria 15, Oñati, T 943-780460. A cheap pensión not far from the main square. Its clean rooms are good value but it’s definitely worth ringing ahead at weekends.

E Arreg, Ctra Garagaltza-Auzoa 21, T 943-780824. An excellent agroturismo a couple of kilometres from town. A big farmhouse in a green valley with beautiful dark-wood rooms, a ping-pong table, and good folk running it.

B Hotel Atalaya, C Itxaropen 1, Mundaka, T 94-6177000, F 94- 6876899, http://www.hotel-atalaya-mundaka.com The classier of the town’s options, with a summery feel to its rooms . Garden and parking adjoin the stately building. Nice breakfasts.

C Hotel Arimune, C Bentalde 95, Bakio, T 94-6194022. Right on the beach, cheerily strewn with honeysuckle, and more originally decorated than many a beach hotel. The terrace is a peaceful spot out of peak season. Closed Dec-Feb.

C Hotel El Puerto, Portu Kalea 1, Mundaka, T 94-6876725, F 94-6876726, hotelelpuerto@euskalnet.net Perhaps the best value of Mundaka’s three hotels, this is set right by the tiny fishing harbour and has cute rooms, some overlooking the harbour (worth paying the few extra euros for). The bar below is one of Mundaka’s best.

C Hostal Torre Ercilla, C Talaranzko 14, Bermeo, T 94-6187598, F 94-6884231, fbarrotabernav@nexo.es A lovely place to stay in Bermeo’s old town, between museum and church. The rooms are thoughtfully designed for relaxation, with small balconies, reading nooks, and soft carpet. There’s also a lounge, terrace, chessboard and barbecue, among other comforts.

D Hostal Aldatzeta, C Erremedio 24, Bermeo, T 94-6187703. Small and attractive hotel not far from the port with soberly pretty exterior rooms with bathroom and TV.
