Camping Portuondo, 1 km out of Mundaka on the road to Gernika, T/F 94-6877701, http://www.campingportuondo.com Sardined during the summer months, this is a well-equipped campsite with a swimming pool, café and laundry. The bungalows, with kitchen, fridge and television, sleep up to four, but are not significantly cheaper than the hotels in town.

C Emperatriz Zita, Santa Elena Etorbidea s/n, Lekeitio, T 94-6842655, F 94-6243500, http://www.saviat.net This slightly odd- looking hotel was built on the site of a palace where Empress Zita lived in the 1920s. Married to the last Austro-Hungarian emperor, who unluckily acceded to the throne in a losing position in WW1, she was left with 8 children when he died of pneumonia on Madeira in 1922. The hotel is furnished in appropriately elegant style and is also a thalassotherapy (seawater) and health centre. The rooms are very pleasant and well-priced for the location and quality, as is the restaurant.

C Hotel Zubieta, Portal de Atea, Lekeitio, T 94-6843030, F 94- 6841099, http://www.hotelzubieta.com A superbly converted coachhouse in the grounds of a palacio. Considering its surprisingly low prices, this is one of the best places to stay in Euskal Herría, with friendly management, a lively bar, and cosy rooms with sloping wooden ceilings. Definitely one to pre-book at weekends. Highly recommended. The hotel also has reasonably priced two- and four-berth apartments attached to the hotel in Lekeitio.

D/C Piñupe Hotela, Av Pascual Abaroa 10, Lekeitio, T 94-6842984, F 94-6840772. The cheapest place in town, and a sound choice. The rooms are ensuite with phone and TV, and are plenty more comfortable than the bar downstairs would indicate.

E-C Arrigorri, Arrigorri 3, Ondarroa, T 94-6134045, F 94- 6833307. A good option across the river from the centre of Ondarroa, right on the beach. There are a variety of rooms with differing prices; the best have sea views. Friendly and comfortable. Breakfast included.

F Patxi, Arta Bide 21, Ondarroa, T 60-9986446. One of only two options in Ondarroa, this is an exceedingly low-priced pensión that has colourful and comfortable rooms with a basic shared bathroom.

B Hotel Parma, C General Jauregui 11, Parte Vieja, T 943-428893, F 943-424082, http://www.hotelparma.com A fairly bland modern hotel whose happiest features are its location by the rivermouth and good views of the Kursaal from the better rooms.

C/B Pensión Gran Bahía, C Embeltrán 16, Parte Vieja, T 943-420216, http://www.paisvasco.com/granbahia Very attractive luxury pensión convenient for both the beach and Parte Vieja. The comfy beds sport leopard-print covers and the rooms are extremely quiet. Immaculately maintained, the place is run in Belle-Époque style. Non-smoking.
