C Hostal Central, Alameda Rekalde 35, T 944-106339, F 944-701576. Metro: Moyúa. True to its name, this newish option is right in the centre of the city, a block from Plaza Moyúa in prime shopping territory. The rooms are quite attractive, and there’s a good feeling about the place; they seem more at home with tourists than business travellers. Internet access available.

C Hotel Zabálburu, C Pedro Martínez Artola 8, T 944-437100, F 944-100073. Euskotren: Zabálburu. Although not in the most attractive part of Bilbao, this hotel is attentive and comfortable. Parking is available for €8.

Albergue Bilbao Aterpetxea, Ctra Basurto-Kastrexana 70, T 944-270054, F 944-275479. Bus 58 from Plaza Circular and the bus station. Bilbao’s cheerful HI hostel is a block-of-flats-sized structure by a motorway on the outskirts of Bilbao. Despite its inconvenient location, it does have good facilities (including bike hire), although it may well be flooded with school groups. It’s just about the cheapest bed in town for single travellers, but couples won’t have much, and the 0930 check-out is a shock to the system. There’s a dining room with full meal service, but no kitchen facilities. Around €12.50 per person depending on season.

A Hotel Deusto, C Francisco Maciá 9, T 944-760006, F 944-762199, Metro: Deusto. This colourfully decorated hotel is an enjoyable place to stay on this side of the river. The large rooms, featuring minibar, safe, Playstation and inviting beds are complemented by an attractively arty bar and restaurant downstairs.

B Hotel Artetxe, Camino de Berriz 112, T 944-747780, F 944-746020. High above Deusto on the Artxanda ridge, this renovated farmhouse offers superb views over the whole city. With attractive wooden furnishings and small but homely bedrooms with beams and views, it’s a great place to stay; but not that handy to get into Bilbao without a car.

C Hotel Plaza San Pedro, C Luzarra 7, T 944-763126, F 944-763895. Metro: Deusto. Disconcertingly set on a back street of automobile workshops, this hotel is pretty close to the centre of Deusto life, attractively modern, and well priced.

A Gran Hotel Puente Colgante, C María Díaz de Haro 2, T 944-014800, F 944-014810. Euskotren: Portugalete. Metro: Areeta. Very recently opened in a reconstructed 19th-century building with a grand façade, this upmarket modern hotel is superbly situated right next to the Puente Vizcaya on the waterfront promenade. All the rooms face outwards, and the hotel has all the facilities you come to expect.

A Hotel Igeretxe, Playa de Ereaga s/n, T 944-910009, F 944-608599. Metro: Neguri. Shaded by palms, this welcoming hotel is right on Ereaga beach, Getxo’s main social strand. Formerly a balneario, the hotel still offers some spa facilities, as well as a restaurant overlooking the slightly grubby sand. Breakfast included.

A Hotel Los Chopos, Av Los Chopos 2, T 944-912255, F 944-912802. Metro: Neguri. A stylish hotel with a garden, peaceful despite the busy road. Away from Getxo’s main bustle, it’s attractively, if formally, furnished with cheerfull, welcoming bedrooms.
