There are three agroturismos in the countryside around Elorrio, all set in typically solid and attractive Basque farmhouses.

D Berriolope, in the hamlet of Berrio, T 94-6820640 is the most luxurious of the three with six attractive doubles with bathroom in a vine-covered stone building.

E Arabio Azpikoa, Barrio Arabio 8, T 94-6583342, has simpler but very pleasant rooms with shared bathrooms.

F Galartxa Barrena, Zenita, T 94-6582707, is the closest to Elorrio, and has rooms with or without bath.

E/D Hotel Vega, C Abasua 2, Markina, T 94-6166015. This sleepy place on the square is a relaxing base and has rooms both with and without bathroom.

Monte Baserria, Barrio Arta 23, near Bolibar, T 944-130987/ 606255424. A big house not far from the tiny village of Bolibar that can be rented for a weekend or by the week. It can work out very cheap, E, for a large group. It’s a good base for walking in the surrounding area and comfortably sleeps up to seven.

The cheaper beds in Oñati tend to fill up quickly at weekends. There’s a small unmarked pensión above Bar Paco at C Zaharra 4; it’s also worth asking the owner of the sweet stall in the main square, who rents a couple of rooms out.

C Ongi, C Zaharra 19, Oñati, T 943-718285, F 943-718284. A family-run well-decorated hotel on the main pedestrian street.

E Goiko Venta, Arantzazu 12, T 943-781305, F 943-780321. Up the hill with good rooms, some with a great view of the valley.
