Hotel Zubieta, Portal de Atea, Lekeitio, T 94-6843030. The lively café bar in this beautifully restored coachhouse is an excellent spot for a chat and a beverage in uplifting surroundings. Sutargi, Nasa Kalea 11, Ondarroa, T 94-6832258. A popular bar with a good-value restaurant upstairs with main dishes, 9-10. Talako bar. Above the fishermans co-operative on the harbour. A great spot for one of Lekeitios rainy days, with a pool table, and a 180º view of the harbour, town, and beaches. Txalupa, Txatxo kaia 7, Lekeitio, T 94-6841386. While Lekeitio isnt as out-and-out Basque as Ondarroa, this bar keeps the Basque rock pumping, and does a range of simple snacks. The best places for pintxos are in the Parte Vieja, which teems with bars. Gros is a quieter but tasty option. Restaurants abound in the old town too, although some of the best are further afield, in the new town or outside the city limits. Casa Nicolasa, C Aldamar 4, T 943-421762. This simple and gracious second floor dining room is the setting for one of the citys best restaurants. The emphasis is on seafood the almejas (small clams) with trout roe are superb and the service is restrained and attentive. Panier Fleuri, Paseo Salamanca 2, T 943-424205. A bright and airy split-level restaurant with a French-inspired menu and an emphasis on fresh market produce and charcoal grilled meats. Urepel, Paseo Salamanca 3, T 943-424040. A long and brooding restaurant with a fairly Spanish feel. The food is lighter, and the highlight is an elegantly treated shellfish. A good wine list accompanies the classy nosh.
