Mesón Los Angeles, C Cristo 12, T 944-460676. Metro: Casco Viejo. Tucked up a side street behind the Ayuntamiento, this restaurant does some no-nonsense and very good fish and meat grills. Good menú del día. Café Boulevard, C Arenal 3, T 944-153128. Metro: Casco Viejo. Fans of Art-Deco will not want to miss this refurbished defender of the style, unchanged from the early 20th century, when it was Bilbaos beloved meeting place. Founded in 1871, there are plenty of seats, good breakfasts, coffees, pintxos and weekday lunchtime platos combinados. El Kiosko del Arenal, Muelle del Arenal s/n. Metro: Casco Viejo. Elegant, cool café under the bandstand in the Arenal. Plenty of outdoor tables overlooking the river. Damned decent coffee. Bermeo, C Ercilla 37, T 944-705700. Metro: Indautxu. Although its the restaurant of the Hotel Ercilla, this stands on its own feet as one of the best places to dine in Bilbao. Specializing in seafood, which is done in both typical Basque styles and some innovative modern styles. Guria, Gran Vía 66, T 944-415780. Metro: San Mamés. One of Bilbaos top restaurants, with a sombrely elegant atmosphere, its stock-in-trade is bacalao. After tasting it here, you may forgive the codfish for all of the bad dishes that have been produced with it in other kitchens and factories around the world; if not, you can write bacalao off for good. There are menús de degustacíon for 41 and 59, and a menú del dia for 28.40. Out with these, count on 60 a head minimum, more if you forsake the fish for the meat, which is tender and toothsome. Asador Jauna, C Juan Zunzunegui 7, T 944-417381. Metro: San Mamés. Despite its characterless location, this is a good choice for the carnivore. The menu is a lot fuller than at a lot of asadors, with plenty of fish, as well as venison, duck, and other departures from the sirloin and T-bone hierarchy. Its fairly pricey but has a good atmosphere when busy, and they usually offer an uninspired daytime menú for around 11-14. Etxeko Tavern, C Henao 27, T 944-235305. Metro: Moyúa. Decent new town bar and restaurant specializing in pintxos, jamón, and bacalao dishes. While the main dishes are good, the lunch menú isnt a bargain at 11. La Barraca, C Bertendona 6, T 944-150818. Metro: Abando. If you fancy paella this might be the place to come; they certainly take it seriously, with 12 different rices. Nicolás, C Ledesma 10, T 944-240737. Metro: Abando. A fairly old-fashioned little bar and restaurant with a small but delicious selection of nibbles as well as a good dining room.
