Dotted Line

€€ Nicolás, C Ledesma 10, T 944-240737. Metro: Abando. A fairly old-fashioned little bar and restaurant with a small but delicious selection of nibbles as well as a good dining room.

€€ Primera Instancia, Alameda Mazarredo 6, T 944-236545. Metro: Abando. Buzzy modern bar that’s upmarket but far from pretentious. Small restaurant with a €19.90 menú de degustacíon. Check out the snazzy umbrella wrapper.

€€ Serantes and Serantes II, C Licenciado Poza 16, Alameda Urquijo 51, T 944-102066. Metro: Indautxu. These marisquerías are not as pricy as their high reputation would suggest, with fish dishes around the €18 mark. It´s very fresh, and the chefs have the confidence to let the flavours of the seafood hold their own. Go for the daily special – usually excellent, or tackle some cigalas, the four-wheel-drive of the prawn world, equipped with pincers (sometimes called Dublin Bay prawns in English).

€€ Sidrería Tártalo, C Alameda Rekalde 69, T 944-100903. Euskotren: Zabálburu, Metro: Indautxu. A cheerful modern restaurant named for the feared cyclops of the Basque mountains and consequently devoted to providing some seriously giant-sized meals. Drink your fill from the vats of cider…

€€ Taberna Zara, C Pablo Picasso 2, T 944-439242. Euskotren: Zabálburu, Metro: Indautxu. Near Plaza Zabalburu, this restaurant, decorated with a tribal vibe, has decent-value menús. Steak and seafood are what they do best.

Artajo, C Ledesma 7, T 944-248596. Metro: Abando. Uncomplicated, candid bar with homely wooden tables and chairs and good traditional snacks of tortilla and pulgas de jamón. Famous for its tigres, mussels in spicy tomato sauce.

Café Iruña, Jardines de Albia s/n, T 944-237021. Metro: Abando. This noble old establishment on the Jardines de Albia is approaching its century in style. Well refurbished, the large building is divided into a smarter café space with wood panelling in neo-Moorish style, and a tiled bar with some good pintxos – including lamb kebabs sizzling on the barbie.

Café La Granja, Plaza Circular 3. T 944-230813. Metro: Abando. Another spacious old Bilbao café, opened in 1926. Its high ceilings and long bar are designed to cope with the lively throng that comes in throughout the day. Plenty of attractive Art Nouveau fittings and good food. Closes fairly early.

Café Mistyk, C Ercilla 1, T 944-236342. Metro: Moyúa. A theatre cafe on the corner of Mazarredo. There are weekly shows on a Tuesday or Thursday night; these vary from flamenco to comedy and are free, but have a consumo mínimo (minimum consumption) of €3 per person.
