€ Café Mistyk, C Ercilla 1, T 944-236342. Metro: Moyúa. A theatre cafe on the corner of Mazarredo. There are weekly shows on a Tuesday or Thursday night; these vary from flamenco to comedy and are free, but have a consumo mínimo (minimum consumption) of €3 per person.

€ Café Monaco, Alameda de Recalde 34, T 944-238684. Metro: Moyúa. A good choice for breakfast, with quality coffee, pintxos and a host with a soft spot for Athletic Bilbao.

€ Despacho, C García Rivero 2, T 944-413570. Metro: Indautxu. Very handy bar for workers in the area, who can tell their boss that they were ‘in the office’ all afternoon.

€ Buddha Bar, C Ayala 1, T 944-157136. Metro: Abando. Tucked away behind the Corte Inglés is this modern Asian fusion restaurant. Choices are mainly centred around Japanese and Thai, which are done well. There’s a good value menú for €8.50, day and night, Monday to Thursday.

€ Don Chufo, C Iparraguirre 17, T 944-235499. Metro: Moyúa. A place that crops up in laptop ads, with dark glass and sleek furniture. Good €9 lunch, within striking distance of the Guggenheim, and popular with business workers.

€ Garibolo, C Fernández del Campo 7, T 944-273255. Metro: Moyúa. While at first glance Bilbao doesn’t seem large enough a Spanish city to sustain a vegetarian restaurant, the colourful Garibolo packs ‘em in, particularly for its €9 lunch special. A range of Asian-inspired dishes as well as recommendable stuffed eggplant/aubergine and organic wines.

€ Guggen Restaurant, Alameda Recalde 5, T 944-248491. Metro: Moyúa. Despite its name and proximity to the museum, this restaurant is a fairly authentic workers’ lunch den, with an unspectacular but enjoyable menú del día for €6.15, and an upgraded version for those who don’t want to pay as little as that.

€ Juantxu, C Licenciado Poza 39. Metro: Indautxu. Decorated with a half-hearted nautical theme, this friendly bar is notable for its strangely addictive mini-hamburger pintxos.

€ La Galea, C Rodrígez Arias 71, T944-425507. Metro: San Mamés. A restaurant which manages to overcome the ugly architecture in this part of town with well-placed creepers and an excellent menú del día which is a treat for €8.50.
