A restaurant which manages to overcome the ugly architecture in this part of town with well-placed creepers and an excellent menú del día which is a treat for 8.50. A modern bar popular with the office crowd and dominated by a huge signed photo of the footballer Joseba Etxebarria in full stride for Athletic Bilbao. Nice pintxos. Taberna Taurina, C Ledesma 5, T 94 4241381. Metro: Abando. A tiny old-time tiles n sawdust bar which is packed top-to-bottom with bullfighting memorabilia. Its fascinating to browse the old pictures which convey something of the sports noble side. The tortilla here also commands respect. Zuretzat, C Iparraguirre 7, T 944-248505. Metro: Moyúa. A decent bar decked out with prints of ships from the golden days of the ocean liner, as well as the hard hats of the workers who built the Guggenheim. Prices reflect passing tourist trade. Zuripot, Cnr C Licenciado Poza and Av Dr Areilza. Metro: Indautxu. A solid corner choice decorated with clowns and strange ceramic figures. Suberb, if skimpy, tortilla. A Deusto institution the front bar has a good selection of posh-pintxos and a couple of comfortable nooks to settle down with a slightly pricy drink. Behind is a restaurant that serves pretty authentic Basque cuisine in generous portions. Deustoarrak, Av Madariaga 9. T 944-751581. This steak n fish restaurant on Deustos liveliest street is decorated in mock-Gothic style with suits of armour guarding the stairs. The menú del día is good value at 8.40. Oriotarra, C Blas de Otero 30, Deusto, T 944-470830. A classy pintxo bar that has won an award for the best bartop snack in Bilbao. A round of applause for the pigs ear millefeuille.
