How to spend your time in the Basque lands depends on your perspective. A Bilbaíno was asked his opinion and after a few minutes of deep thought, he came up with the following: If you have two days, spend a day in San Sebastián and a day in Bilbao. If you have a month, spend a day in San Sebastián and the rest in Bilbao. Finding the best time to visit Euskadi is partly determined by your priorities. The coast has a very high annual rainfall (mostly drizzle); the driest, hottest time is summer, but it's difficult to find accommodation, and prices rise, especially in the resort towns. Thebest compromise is to go around May or October, but expect drizzle; the emerald green of the Basque countryside doesnt comefor free. You may want to time your trip around a specific festival. Bilbao's Semana Grande in August, or the Rioja harvest in early October, for example, but be sure to reserve accommodation beforehand. Transport and business hours are often hugely affected by local and national holidays. The Basque country is very expensive compared with much of Spain, particularly in the eating and drinking department. Accommodation is better value for pairs than solo travellers, but several of the smaller towns lack viable budget options. Fifty euros a day per person would cover a cheap pensión, a set meal at lunchtime, some pintxos or tapas in the evenings, some drinks and coffees, a couple of sights, and bus or train fares around the region. Eighty per day in a good pensión and you wont be counting pennies, with a hundred and fifty per day, you'll be very comfy indeed.
