Most of Bologna's main attractions are within a short walk of each other. However, there might be a temptation to cram in too many sights. Time is equally enjoyably spent simply strolling around the arcaded streets. That said, a weekend visit will comfortably allow for a snapshot of the principal sights in the heart of Bologna's old centre while still allowing time for shopping and lounging in cafés. Starting in piazza Maggiore, these might include: a look inside the Basilica di San Petronio and a climb up the Torre Asinelli before a wander around the streets of the university quarter down via Zamboni and into the beautiful church and oratory of San Giacomo Maggiore before ending up in the Pinacoteca gallery, the best introduction to the Bolognese school of art. If it is Friday or Saturday, the market on piazza VIII Agosto will make a lively antidote to the art. You should also make time for a look around the serene cloisters of the Santo Stefano church complex. Finally you'll probably want to walk off all the mortadella by taking a Sunday stroll up the colonnade to the shrine of San Luca where you can enjoy panoramic views over the city and lower Apennines.
