Bologna has a thriving arts scene fuelled by budding and aspiring student artists and a very supportive local council. Particularly around the university district, the city is plastered with posters announcing the latest show, event or spectacle and flyers are constantly handed to you along via Belle Arti, via Zamboni and via dell'Indipendenza. An excellent TimeOut-style monthly English guide, TalkaBOut (http://www.talkabout.it) available in many hotels, bars, bookshops and cinemas has reviews of bars, restaurants and exhibitions in the city. There are free local Italian newspapers, CityBologna, BolognaBologna and Leggo Bologna which provide space for and actively promote youth art. The council has also just started published a monthly bi-lingual guide to the city's arts entitled Bonews. The Bolognese are also very talented at improvising and converting the most surprising urban spaces into exhibition venues, be they car parks, wastelands or disused buildings. Many of the city's churches, virtually art galleries themselves, often host temporary exhibitions and concerts.
