Dotted Line

Al Calice, via Clavature 13, T 051-264506. Closed Sun A modern, neutral-looking bar specializing in fresh oysters at aperitif time, together with the appropriate tipple.

Café De Paris, piazza Minghetti, T 051-234980. Open daily until late. This is the hottest night-spot at the moment and also does great lunches. At night there are masses of top aperitivi snacks, plates of pasta, sandwiches, crisps, olives – which means it is packed between 1900 and 2100 on Fridays and Saturdays when the beautiful people come to cruise and the DJ cranks up the volume. Things calm down later and you can find a table in the covered outdoor section.

Canton de' Fiori, via dell'Indipendenza 1, T 051-267300. Closed Sun. In the ancient quadrivio where the florists sell their fragrant wares with a few tables outside under porticoes in summer season. Frescoes above the entrance depict three goods bestowed by mother nature on man: bread, wine and canapa with the inscription in vina laetitia e cannabis protecta.

Mocambo, via d'Azeglio 1/7, T 051-229 516. 0700-2030. Closed Sun. Aperitifs for the chic with delicious spicy nibbles and generous glassfuls of your favourite plonk. Also do fantastic breakfasts with the famed, super creamy, café crème.

Rosa Rose, via Clavature 18, T 051-225071. At its quietest at lunch but still popular for a light snack, this place transforms at night with great crowds of sunglassed fighetti spilling out onto the narrow street with the gigantic appetizers on offer at aperitivo time. So varied and bountiful are they that you'll be hard-pushed to leave with an appetite afterwards. Currently one of Bologna's trendiest night-spots (you're either a Café de Paris or a Rosa Rose person) the bar is jam-packed in the evenings and the locals fall over themselves to be seen here. Take one of the laden carving boards and sit more peacefully in the street.

Birreria Il Druido, via Mascarella 26/b, T 051-226757. Closed Wed. More than 150 brands of beer with good sandwiches and chatty bartenders. Open air seating during the hot summer months.

Bottega del Vino Olindo Faccioli, via Altabella 15, T 051-223171. 1800-0200. Closed Sun. Recently restored this historic and centrally located tavern still retains its 1920s interior with dark wood furnishings, stylish chairs and the main bar area. A convivial place for the evening aperitif where in theory, in time-honoured ritual, the first drink should contain an uovo sodo (boiled egg) – not obligatory. Wine tasting evenings are organized occasionally.

Cantina Bentivoglio, via Mascarella 4/b, T 051-222 119. From 2000. Closed Mon. The heart of the Bolognese night-scene, this huge cavernous jazz café offers great wine and simple food and live jazz every night. The specials are always worth checking and are delicious. You can chose to sit down by the band and pay a little extra, or stick to the quieter rooms on ground level. Booking is essential for a Sat-night table downstairs.

Celtic Druid, via Caduti di Cefalonia 5, T 051-224 212. Open daily. Just off via Rizzoli. An Irish Pub with a name one would never find on the Esmerald Isle, but it does boast Irish staff and a happy hour from opening at 2030. This is the first port of call for ex-pat workers and the kind of place where everyone remembers your name.
