Dotted Line

Rose Selavy, via Marsala 5, T 051-271961. Super-chic restaurant/bar. Everything about this bar screams Lenny Kravitz from the zebra-print upholstery to the 'is that a small creature?' light shades. A place to see and be seen, with famously slow service.

Bistrot Le Stanze (del Tenente), via Borgo San Pietro 1, T 051-228767. Closed Sun and Sat lunchtime. Set in the magnificent former chapel of the Bentivoglio, with tall stone ceilings and walls covered in 17th-century frescoes, this bar has one the city's most unusual, edgy and creative décors, very popular with young and trendy locals. Onto this classical background the owners have placed a mixture of futuristic, Gothic and 70s furnishings, from tall dribbled candleticks, to metal lamps and orange sofas. There are three contrasting rooms off the main bar, each divided by a secretive curtain. One is a dining room with a traditional menu served in trendy (small) portions. If its not taken, sit on the raised section where the altar used to be. The venue sometimes hosts classical music concerts. Cocktails are the speciality of the house. Internet.

Lord Lister, via Zamboni 56, T 051-240886. A lively English-style pub under the porticoes of the student district with ranch-like sets of tables and chairs outside.

X, via del Borgo di San Pietro. Very fighetto Cuban, Latin-America bar.

Scuderia, piazza Verdi. Recently opened, this bar-club under a beautiful frescoed arch stands on the site of the former stables (scuderia) of the Bentivoglio family. Run by the Rosa Rose group it is a typically funky hybrid of cool grooves and tunes for young, trendy and beautiful locals. Occasionally hosts concerts and live music on the square outside.

Lido del Guasto, via del Guasto, http://www.universointerculturale.it Literally meaning 'waste' the 'guasto' is a regenerated former children's playground built in 1970s which had been lost to drug pushers. A manifestation of the creativity of the Bolognese youth, this bar hosts a free-wheeling and apparently improvized mix of post-modern fashion shows, art shows, and a changing choice of music from piano-bar relaxation to drum 'n' bass, all in the open air.

Marsalino, via Marsala, 13/d, T 051-238 675. Closed Mon, 1200-0200. Cosy café with great specials and good wine. Very small so get there early.

Alla Corte di Bacco, corte Isolani 7, T 051-237884. In the arcade complex just off piazza Santo Stefano this is a lovely little wine bar offering over 400 different labels.

Chalet Giardini Margherita, Giardini Margherita T 051-307593. Open every day in summer. This bar/café in the centre of the park by the lake is an excellent venue for watching the sun go down over an ice-cream or something a little stronger.
