Far Magia, via S Isaia, 4/bc, T 051-6449561. Packed and pricey cocktail bar with great decor and a good chef offering a delicious and daily varying menu. Look out for the girl in a silver bikini on a swing and the dancing Chinese dragon.

Habana Vieja, via de Grifoni, 5/2, T 051-584313. 1900-late. Cocktails, Mexican tapas, Cuban cigars – this place is Latino overload but fun. Thursdays is live music with visiting 'Cuban' bands. Lively at weekends. This is also the safest bar in Bologna due to the proximity of the Questura, so if you have a taste for off-duty boys in blue who know how to Lambada, this is heaven.

Kappa Sushi, piazza Malpighi, 14, T 051-221 773. Bar/restaurant offering cool relief from daily madness. Water pours from ceiling to floor in a constant stream, while mellow lounge tunes from resident DJs soothe the soul. Slip by for a Japanese beer or full set menu amongst the foliage. Booking is essential as the bar gets busy with Beat Party on Saturdays, gay night on Tuesdays and international DJs the rest of the time. Spontaneous chair dancing is highly probable as the small hours approach.

Monastero, via del Pratello, 66/a, T 051-557172. Closed Sun. Huge arched wooden doors and killer cocktails, this is an upmarket little spot to stop and have a natter. Outdoor seating in summer.

Riff Raff, via del Pratello 3, T 051-222888. Open until the last person leaves. Closed Mon. A pleasant wine bar with a good selection of international labels and good salads, cold meats and cheeses too. Also mouth-watering Sicilian puddings with half-bottles of dessert wine to accompany them.

Rovescio, via Pietralata 75, T 051-523545. 2000-0200. Closed Mon. Owned by the Greek owner of To Steki, this wine bar has an international flavour both in its wines and small hot meals which are served until 0230. A useful place late at night and a nice little place for a quiet drink with friends.

Stranamore, via del Pratello 44a. Achingly trendy but with occasional art shows.

Transilvania Horror Kafe, via San Felice 134, T 051-556 444, (there's also a branch on via Zamboni). 3-D version of Meatloaf's Bat out of Hell album cover. Red lighting, shelve- loads of skulls and clear glass table-coffins complete with skeletons and the occasional snake. Interesting.

Viola, via Sant'Isia, 24, T 051-331 884. Closed Thu, open 1700-2300. Gentle Austrian-style café and one of the few places in town with seats and plenty of space to stretch tired legs. Also do great aperitivi, but close early.
